It should. Take a look at the original Star Trek Online trailer, at the 1 minute mark.

Did a lil' Google/forum-fu:

Apparently a holdover from the assets bequeathed from Perpetual.

(via: http://sto-forum.perfectworld.com/showthread.php?t=228148&page=5)

Also see Suricata (Tim Davies') concept from 2010:

I am going to hurt myself laughing so hard at the explosions on the o-forum if the Guardian has an alternate saucer with those cutouts.

ETA: that third one, in red: those pylons look very KDF. Maybe it's the coloration on the triangular shape and the shape of the nacelles, but wow.

So if they've had the art/assets laying around all this time, why's it just coming out now?

Back when the original trailer came out, people lost their shit over that ship. The nerds raged, "There's holes in it!" and Cryptic ended up scrapping the design.

4 years later it gets pushed into the game.

Funnier still is that the rage was towards a ship developed by and/or with the actual ship designers for the Star Trek TV show and movies.

It's also funny that people raged that Starfleet is still fielding Miranda and Constitution class ships in STO and now raging that SF's ship designs aren't stodgily sticking to the old TNG/VOY/DS9 design language.

i like the ships with "holes" in it.... the "holes" give a sense of uniqueness to the class of ship.... just like with the USS VENGEANCE from Into Darkness, which is one of my favorite ships..... and though it will never happen, id love to fly one in STO....!

This is something else that leads me to believe that we're seeing the last major expansion to Star Trek Online. The devs are pulling out all of the stops: increasing the cap rank to fleet admiral, implementing the races of the Delta Quandrant/Voyager era and introducing ideas and items previously withheld.

I'm not saying that STO is going to die tomorrow or that fun updates won't be coming anymore. But games, all games go through a life cycle and STO is starting to get a little long in the tooth as far as MMO's go. I'm quite sure that most will still be here 2 and 3 years from now. But I think Delta Rising quite probably represents that last major expansion to the game.

Yes, we all love Star Trek (ok, most of us). We expect certain things from the franchise and are disappointed when the decision makers act contrary to what we hold most dear. But, I say that we should enjoy it for what it is.

& it all started in canon with the Oberth class. B)

Now, with ARC being pushed on us, how soon before STEAM gets knocked aside so I can get a Fleet Steamrunner class without having to get STEAM?

The Perpetual concepts predate game launch, obvs.

but the ring primary hull, I'd wager is Suricata's doing, ever since he joined Cryptic. From his blog posts, it looks like those designs were brainstorming submissions for Cryptic's Enterprise-F design contest (he apparently went with a different concept altogether).

I thought it was ugly at first but I couldn't afford the pack so I got it as my new ship and I really love it. Best ship ever for me.

I think the design might be referencing some of this too ( http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/post-nation/wp/2014/06/11/this-is-the-amazing-design-for-nasas-star-trek-style-space-ship-the-ixs-enterprise/ ) that is, taking the outer ring, fitting it to the front and rotating it to be more in line with the ship's axis. Or in a egg and chicken kind of way perhaps.

I used a standard hull color with red bussard collectors on my escort & just swapped the nacelles between my cruiser and my science & I am happy with all 3 designs now....

& I kept the donut hole!

Donut hole skin options should become available for every saucer in game. B)
