Space combat is HERE!

For subscribers at least.

I played a little bit with it yesterday and was wanting to gauge other people's opinions on it. It's definitely very different than the space flight mini-game, and it's very different than STO's space combat. STO was nice, slow, methodical. This is like a hyperactive STO space combat meets TRON. It's definitely different than anything I've played before, and it'll definitely take some getting used to.

I'm still trying to figure out all the mechanics, but I think I have the basics down at least. It'll probably help when I get back home to my usual gaming computer as opposed to my laptop I'm playing at the moment.

There is one tip I'd recommend for everyone: PLAY THE TUTORIAL! When you go to your hangar (the H button), you'll see a question mark (?) in the upper right of the screen. When you click that, it'll take you directly into the tutorial. It's not complete by any means, but it's better than getting dropped into a PVP match and having no clue what you're doing. The rest of the info comes from the pop-up screens and give some good information.

For those of you who are familiar with STO, the ships are in some ways very similar. You've got the 3 different speed/maneuverable classes: the fast and agile, the medium speced, and the slow tank. Each has basic attributes; for example, one deals a lot of damage but takes a while to warm up its weapons, another has it on demand at all times but deals less with each hit. Luckily you're able to try out each one at any time to really figure out your playing style.

Similar in some ways to STO as well is the officer system: you have a co-pilot and several other slots (damage, defense, etc.) where you can choose from one of your own companions (each having set specialties/abilities) or a provided crew. Note that you can only use the companions you have acquired so far, so if you're level 20, you may only have 1 or 2 to choose from other than the provided officers.

One thing that I noticed that wasn't fully obvious in the tutorials was how to target. You have two basic types of weapons that are similar to the space mini-game: lasers that shoot where your ship is pointing (left click) and cannons that lock on (right click). A big difference comes in where you aim for your lasers -- you aim at where the person is GOING not at the ship itself. You can see where they're going by the little dot and line in front of the enemy ship.

I hope this little bit will help some get started, I know I'm just starting out myself, and I'll post more as I figure it out.

Definitely play the tutorial, it really helps. I wanted to during beta but it just wasnt working then. This reminds me of the old wing commander games, on a more simplistic level. When you mentioned the ships you missed that sometime in the next 2 months a bomber class will come out as well. Those are a heavy class with bomb bays. The bomb bays can contain drones, mines, or possibly other things. I like this and will be playing much more of it.

It seems to be a lot like Tie Fighter and X-Wing to me, just remember when you're shooting at someone to lead the target at all times. Comparably try not to fly in a predictable flight path

Is it level-agnostic or have it's own leveling and skill systems or something else? I mean, does everyone start out on an equal footing, without any regard for their "normal" level and skills, etc.?

I actually want to say it's only for endgame but I could be wrong.

Honestly, you shouldn't have to lead the target if you're using a laser. >.>
