Need/Greed Guidelines on Loot

June 12 2013
It has been brought to my attention that some people are "needing" instead of "greeding" in STFs and other fleet events. When one "needs" an item, it takes priority over all "greed" rolls and effectively shuts out everybody who clicked "greed". If two or more people click "need", it's decided by a random roll.

The guideline for need/greed on fleet events is to always use greed unless you really need the item for your character. Out of respect for my team, I will always mention when/what I need when I do click need. For instance, the Omega Reputation System has destroyed my supply of large hyposprays on my Reman. So, I will say, "I will be needing on Cordrazine, and greeding on everything else." before the game begins. This way, there's no unexpected surprises when this happens. Constantly clicking "need" is viewed as selfish and shouldn't be done in 100% Stonewall Groups. In sum, here are four easy guidelines I follow:

  1. Always remind the group to greed on items.
  2. By default, greed with Stonewall groups.
  3. If there's one or more pug, need.
  4. When needing during a Stonewall group, announce what you will be needing on beforehand.

Following this advice should ensure the fairness for all involved and give us all a level playing field to acquire loot. Please let me know if you have any questions, comments, or concerns by replying to this post or approaching me privately.

I agree that greeding items by default, is the courteous thing to do when teaming with members of the fleet where no loot policy has been established before the commencement of the run.

As Aztroz has suggested, it's also a good idea to come to an agreement amongst yourselves as to how your group will be handling loot drops before launching each mission, thereby hopefully preventing any hard feelings.

Happy trekking and looting all!

Thanks for bringing this up Keston, the loot options is one of those things that if a guideline isn't set per match, general courtesy can sometimes be overlooked.

In my opinion, greed should be the usual fault selection with fleet groups. A simple reminder in match chat prior to starting a run may suffice. Some PUGs are good with it, some aren't.

The selection may then have to be altered to need if there seems to be a break in communication. Simply advise the team in team chat if this is the case.
With the release of the expansion and with all the new characters having been created, everyone needs to build up their EC inventory and preferred item pick-ups, if you happen to be in a situation where you really need more pick-ups than usual, discuss it with the group prior to needing everything without consensus. This may help prevent hard feelings or further misunderstandings.

When I was admiral of PvE I always instituted this in my runs, a very simple rule;

Greed for Fleet
Need for PUGs!

I know because the game at large just lives on a need everything mentality that some people slip up when in fleet groups. But i try to politely remind them when this happens.

I only hit need by mistake in Fleet groups. Most of the time, depending on what characters are in the group, for example Remans/Romulans I try to pass on everything in case it is something those toons can use. I will try and pay closer attention and try not to need by mistake.

Sometimes people will hit need by accident. Most of the time he/she will tell the rest of the team it was only an accident. :)

If someone on your team is constantly needing everything without a reason, to make things a little fair, sometimes the rest of the entire team will have to need.

I honestly didn't know how any of this worked. I usually hit "pass". Thanks!

Need will get priority on loot. If more than one need, a loot roll will take place between the needing players. If none need, the same will happen or those who greed. If all pass, loot will remain on the field at which point if anyone picks it up again, they will automatically get it in their inventory by default instead of going through the process again:)

Hope that helps

I don't think the problem is with mistakes. It's REALLY easy to spot a mistake, because the person will only Need on one random thing. It generally won't be a MK XII Purple thing either. If you accidentally 'Need' a bottle of Yamok sauce you're either a klutz or a Cardassian petaQ (in which case I will put a disruptor bolt through your skull on principle jk jk jk)

If you 'Need' everything with your fellow Fleeties you are officially 'that guy'. You know, that one person who eats all the red Starbursts in the pack. Or the one who cuts in line at a buffet. Don't be That Guy.

Edit: And yeah, it's true that the general game mentality is to Need everything. But the buffet analogy still stands. If I go to a Chinese Buffet you bet I'm gonna pile my plate with General Tso's without regard for anyone else. It's a restaurant, I'm paying for all the General they can supply me with. However, if my friend hosts a buffet at their house, I exercise a LOT of restraint- I want to make sure my friends get a chance at everything before I pig the hell out. Same basic setting, but the different group of people involved means WAY different rules.

Full disclosure. My bank alt has a sizeable liquor hoard stockpiled.

If and when the Borg, Klingons, and Iconians overrun the Federation, you better believe I'm going to be prepared to keep the happy juice flowing.

Or did we learn nothing from the BSG reboot?

I'm pretty sure I'm one of the sinners - I'm used to insanity of the public queues, and forget to change in fleet events. as often as not, there's no actual thought on "hit ctrl-q to make that box go away". If y'all catch me doing it, please holler at me!

Thanks for the reminder!

I imagine most of the offenses are either A) mistakes (hey, in the heat of battle, we all slip up once in a while) and B) members newer to STFs or the fleet, who are used to the NEED EVERYTHING mentality that the rest of the game's player-base lives by.

Thankfully, whenever this happens in a fleet STF and a reminder is dropped, I've never seen anyone be belligerent about it or keep doing it. That's why this fleet is AWESOME.
