Part One: Prelude to Despair

Through the vastness of space, within Federation territory, a large Starship was sailing through the stars. This was the Akira Class Starfleet vessel named the USS Adonis. Though no sound can be heard in the vacuum of space, within the comfortable climate of the Adonis the voice of a young man can be heard singing inside his quarters as his body can be seen swaying to the music accompanying him, slowly at first then picking up speed naturally with the rhythm.

"Now and then I think of when we were together..." The young man leans to his left slightly.

"Like when you said you felt so happy you could die...." He slowly leans right, raising his hands slightly.

"Told myself that you were right for me." His elbows now raise up, his arms now perpendicular to him.

"But felt so lonely in your company." His feet spread a foot apart, as if bracing himself.

"But that was love and it's an ache I still remember..." His knees bent slightly, his hand goes to his heart.

"You can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness..." His free arm wraps around his chest.

"Like resignation to the end, always the end." His head lifts up and his eyes glance over to his window.

"So when we found that we could not make sense-" A soft smile graces his beautiful face.

"Well you said that we would still be friends-" His eyes dart over from the windows to the door.

"But I'll admit that I was glad it was over..." His eyes close as he takes in a deep breath.

"But you didn't have to cut me off!" He sings with a resonant volume as someone enters his quarters.

"Make out like it never happened and that we were nothing!" His eyes open, looking at his visitor.

"And I don't even need your love!!" He points to her as she stands before the closing doors.

"But you treat me like a stranger and that feels so rough..." both his hands cover his heart, smiling.

"No you didn't have to stoop so low!" He puffs out his chest, pointing at her once more, viciously.

"Have your friends collect your records and then change your number!!" He turns away hastily.

"I guess that I don't need that though..." His volume decreases significantly.

"Now you're just somebody that I used. to. know..." He slowly wraps his arms around himself, gently.

The young woman who entered into the young mans quarters raises an eyebrow and allows a giant smile to appear on her crimson painted lips, the small beauty mark on the corner of her mouth only accentuating her smile and gorgeous appearance. She slowly walks over behind the young man, moving in rhythm to the beat of the music slyly. She places herself directly behind him, wrapping her arms around his chest and self-hugging arms. Her lips reach to his right ear and she begins to sing the next verse of the song, her soprano voice was heavenly and airy, her tone serious to reflect the meaning of the song. And somehow her thick french accent only giving more life to the lyrics.

"Now and then I think of all the times you screwed me over." She holds him tightly causing him to laugh.

"But had me believing it was always something that I'd done..." Her arms make their way to his back.

"But I don't wanna live that way!" She instantly pushes him, point as he stumbles forward.

"Reading into every word you say!!" She stifles a laugh as he falls onto his sofa.

"You said that you could let it go!!" she lowers her arms and gives him a sly look.

"And I wouldn't catch you hung up on somebody that you used to know!!"

She suddenly lunges forward and jumps into the air, crashing onto his lap. They both laugh hysterically as he catches her, both embracing the other as the music continues and they stumble to catch up to it, both beginning to sing in unison, and loudly as well. So loud that those who happen to be passing by in the hallway could easily hear them. However, it bothered no one as they had all become accustomed to it, and in fact enjoyed it a lot.

"But you didn't have to cut me off!!" Their foreheads touch as they lean against each other.

"Make out like it never happened and that we were nothing..." They rub their noses together softly.

"And I don't even need your love!!" They both lean backwards, acting out heartbreak.

"But you treat me like a stranger and that feels so rough!" Both shake their heads at each other.

"No you didn't have to stoop so low!!" They suddenly point at each other, poking at the chest.

"Have your friends collect your records and then change your number!!" They lock eyes.

"I guess that I don't need that though!!" They both lean in towards each other.

"Now you're just somebody that I used to know!!" Both embrace again and suddenly roll off the sofa.

The young man looked to the young woman he was now laying atop after having rolled off the sofa with her in tow. He laughed with her at their silliness and looked down at her, finally speaking instead of singing. "It never ceases to amaze me, you know?". The young woman looks up at him through her de-shelved hair, laughing at his words. "What? How much stronger I am than you little boy?" She raises her left arm and bends her elbow, flexing her well toned muscles triumphantly. The young man stands up and aids the young lady to her feet as he speaks. "Actually yes, that too. But I meant how you always turn up when I need you most." The young man turns with a smile on his face and reaches a dresser. He scrambles through the top drawer after he opens it. He finds a scratched PADD and lifts it up to eye level. He looks it over quickly and smiles, tossing it behind him, over his shoulder, as he closes the drawer to the young woman who catches it with an ease that would suggest that it was a more than often occurrence. "What's this?" she asks as she begins to read the material. The young man only turns and looks at her with a soft pride in his eyes. As he is about to speak, the intercom chimes and the voice of the Captain is heard.

"Counselor, can you come to the bridge?"

"Is something the matter Captain?"

"We have been getting some transmissions of a -strange- incident."

"I'm on my way Captain."

"Counselor, Is she with you?"

"Of course she is, ha ha."

"Hi Captain." The young woman cut in.

"Good, both of you can make your way up here."

"On our way Captain." They both said in unison as they locked arms and proceeded out of the young mans tastefully decorated quarters. The two left into the hallway and were met by a small applause by the passerby's, and they bowed jokingly, having gotten used to the openness of their friendship which was happily accepted by the rest of the crew... mostly... like 97%.

"Captain's log, Stardate 60792.96. Slumber... While a thing needed by the vast majority of known species, it has apparently becoming a disease capable of killing thousands. We have arrived on a Federation Colony that has been experiencing an epidemic of, how do I put it? ...sleep. At first we believed there to be something wrong with the original report. However upon receiving visual transmissions from the colony, confirming the presence of some unknown disease, we have set out to investigate the situation being the nearest starship. We have received medical reports from the colony, however they do not hold much detail. I have set the medical staff, under CMO Dr. Reeves' direction, to begin research into the matter. This may turn out to be a rescue mission for those still remaining alive and uninfected. Out of a population of 130 thousand, only 23 thousand remain 'conscious'. Troubling indeed. We have already planned a way to beam down onto the surface safely, by wearing containment suits. From the little data we have, the doctor suspects that it may be air-born. One thing is certain... The visuals provided to us for confirmation were more than disturbing... I will never erase them from my mind. If we cannot save these people... I pray that God may do so with their souls."

-Captain Haou's Last Log Entry.

One hour after the young man and woman were called to the bridge, the USS Adonis was set to a high warp setting of eight, coordinates heading directly to the newly established Federation Colony on a recently approved, M class planet that has come to be called Da'vani II. The colony itself instantly flourished upon establishment, due to the vast richness in precious ores that are commonplace on the planet. Mines were instantly structured and operated with a fierce efficiency. The colony proved to be a massive boon for the Federation, and soon with its flourishing came an explosion in population, starting with the family of the miners. This soon spread and the planet became a wondrous testing site for civil technology. Things to make life better, more convenient, was to be invented within the labs of Da'vani II. However, A message was received eight hours ago, a plea for assistance from the colonist, who now numbered in the hundred thousands. The Adonis was the nearest ship, thus it was the one assigned to offer assistance and try to solve the mystery of this sudden 'plague' that has emerged and is apparently threatening all the settlers, and the use of the planet itself. The information relayed to Starfleet was scarce and far in-between. And the information given to the Captain of the Adonis was even more so. However, a mission was a mission, and trusting in their superiors, the crew of the Adonis would comply happily, as their orders are to provide assistance to others.

Within the Akira Class starship, the crew progresses with their day to day responsibilities. Within the newly updated recreational holodeck, a group of crew members whom have been relieved until their next shift, are enjoying a relaxing performance given by one of their own, the young man who had been singing in his quarters prior. The ships' Counselor proves to be a notable vocalist, singing to the crew within a simulation of an old, laid back jazz club from Earth history. As the counselor sings, his company relaxes and kick back, taking in the soothing atmosphere from a hard days' work. Ensign Geroff begins the applause as the counselor finishes his song, and the audience soon follows her example. The counselor laughs gently as he raises a hand and speaks softly into the cube-like microphone. "Thank you everyone. We're going to let the band rest up a bit before we continue on." Stepping away from the mic, the counselor walks off of the small stage and makes his way over to his friends, all of whom are sitting at the bar, save for one who is off flirting with a waitress character.

"Nice lineup Narciso. You gave me goosebumps!" Exclaimed Ensign Geroff, her busty chest rising and falling as she laughs haughtily, moving her hands up and down her upper arms to express a false sense of cold. She spins in her chair, letting loose as she grasps her martini glass from the bar-top and slips away. Geroff spots something through the corner of her eyes and starts pointing towards it drastically, flailing about while trying to swallow her drink in time to use her voice to express what she is seeing. Narciso glances over to where she was pointing and catches the sight of lieutenant Cherrosk getting slapped across the face by the waitress. Following the echo from the hard hit, Narciso hears the sudden silence broken only by the gulp of Geroff and her loud laughing. The ensign stands up from her bar stool, her tight, forming fitting and sparkling blue dress, shimmering with the soft lights of the club, flutters behind her every taken step. She reaches the lieutenant, sneaking up behind him, and places her hand firmly on his right shoulder, using her free hand to remove the golden and curly locks of her hair that had managed to slip out from behind her ear. "Cherrosk..." she whispers under her breath, placing her lips closer to his ear, "..you know that the waitress will reject you every single time right? She's programed to N-E-V-E-R fall in love. You know its against regulations to fall for a fictional character, non?" Her thick, french accent heavy even through her whisper. The hand she placed on his shoulder suddenly rises and slams down causing a loud 'pat' to sound out and it made Cherrosk stumble forward. He recovers and turns back to face Geroff, giving her a fake punch to the gut and causing her to flinch lightly. He laughs as he then raises an arm and hooks it around her bare, milky white shoulders. "I know that Geroff! I was the one who made the adjustments! But you know me: Gotta keep checking it to make sure it works!" He laughs again as he walks towards the bar and drags Ensign Geroff with him.

Narciso smiled softly throughout watching his friends interact and joke around. He turns and faces the bartender, ordering a non-alcoholic drink and receiving a congratulations for his performance. He is then patted on the back firmly by Cherrosk, as the two friends join him. Geroff smiles her devious smile and looks to the counselor. "So, any interesting sessions lately Narciso?" She raises an eyebrow as he looks over to her, giving her his signature 'you know better than that' look. "Ensign, that is of the utmost classified manner." He speaks with a serious face that lasts for a few seconds before a smile breaks through. The three continue their conversation, the last two of the five return to the bar after dancing to the band as it toned its instruments, having a laugh at it and comparing it to the musical styling of the last planet they had visited on their past mission. Through the enjoyment, the intercom beeps and the Captains' voice is heard calling for all hands to standby at their designated stations. He tells that they have reached Da'vani II and that they will begin their investigation on the troubles on the planets' surface. He then calls the away team, of which both Ensign Geroff and lieutenant Cherrosk are assigned to. Narciso looks to them and smiles weakly. Geroff however, raises her hands above her head and waves them back and forth, "Oui, oui. We know. 'Be careful you two'. I swear Narciso, you're worse than my grand-mère and you're younger than moi!" Geroff turns abruptly and this causes her very long hair to whip at Narciso's face. He instinctively ducks quickly, out of sheer learned reflex, and lets the hair slap Cherrosk instead. Geroff laughs as she begins to trot off, calling the exit to the holodeck. The lieutenant merely goes wide eyed and still, then suddenly moves towards the exit, shouting after the ensign. "Marietta!! Marietta!! Get back here! That's the thirtieth time you've smacked me with your hair! Mariet-MARIETTA!!" the two are no longer heard as the holodeck doors close behind Cherrosk.

Narciso sighs softly as he leans against the bar, looking towards his two remaining friends. They are just cadets, who found themselves getting some experience on an actual starship in their last year of Starfleet Academy. One of them points over to Narciso, through the holographic crowd, and then to the small stage. Narciso smiles greatly as he tilts his head back then forward, stretching his neck. "Computer, how much longer until I have to appear on the bridge?" He asks as he walks towards the stage, reaching for the mic stand, which causes the holographic audience to clap in approval. The computers' feminine voice calls out, alerting that Narciso has just under three hours until he needs to report to the bridge and take his seat beside the Captain. Saying thank you to the computer, he clears his throat and begins to sing one of his favorite songs, "Have not been to Paradise", as the band begins to play. He continues this enjoyment for only a mere short while longer, releasing all his pent up stress and anxiety. For some reason he was feeling uneasy... There was a tension in his chest, it had appeared just after the Captain called for the away team to form up... Something was beginning to eat away at his core. Ever since they arrived in orbit over Da'vani II, he has been getting a 'drowsy' sensation, even though he was well rested and full of energy. Could this be the emotions of those on the planet? All the Captain had informed them was that there was a 'sleeping sickness' of some kind stirring on the planet. But could it really have such an effect? And where was this sensation of 'guilt' coming from? Maybe it was nothing... He hoped it was nothing... But of course, he knew better than to hope. Logic dictates that this was something important. He would have to convey this to the Captain.
