Roleplay signups here!
Congratulations!
You have been assigned to the command of Captain Caroline Walker on the upcoming exploration mission of her Nova class science vessel, the U.S.S. Sally Ride. Walker, a renowned astrophysicist and something of a maverick, is a staunch proponent of Starfleet's mission to educate the best and brightest of the Federation. Her ships are often affectionately referred to as "floating apprenticeships" or "Academy postdoc," because she takes pains to commingle promising novices and accomplished veterans on her crew rosters, and to bring together as diverse a cohort of officers as possible. She values debate and independent thought, expecting her officers to constantly challenge her and each other. To that end, she keeps her chain of command flexible, frequently rewarding exemplary service by promoting subordinates or appointing them to positions of higher responsibility. After years of working with university-level students, she is less of a strict disciplinarian than many captains, and looks for talent rather than spotless conduct when recruiting. Her officers' off-duty exploits are their own concern, so long as their performance remains top-notch.
The question is, what sort of person has Captain Walker just offered a commission? Describe your character briefly or in detail, as you wish, but make sure to highlight four crucial points:
The first three are self-explanatory. The fourth bears some discussion.
In the interest of flexibility, we will not be appointing players to permanent crew positions straight out of the gate. You can say that your character is a doctor, but not the Chief Medical Officer -- not yet, anyway. The list of specializations on your doff roster is a great place to start, but you may, if you wish, describe your character's skill set in some detail. Also keep in mind that a starship will almost always have more than one officer in each specialty aboard; another player's interest in a role doesn't mean you can't try it, too. Neither must you be confined to one role: Data is an accomplished conn officer and technician; Scotty was equally handy with the warp core and the transporter. Rest assured that our goal here is flexibility and adaptability -- your character will have career mobility as the story continues.
Everyone's invited to the big kickoff event August 18, at 2 PM EST (10 PM GMT). Star Trek: Destiny opens as the Sally Ride heads into deep space with her new crew. Attendance at moderated roleplay events is not mandatory, and we will set up the situation to encourage small pick-up scenes between players. Any results of the event that affect the entire ship will be announced here on the forum. However, if you won't be able to make it to a lot of the events for any reason, please give your character a specialty that shines outside of high-stakes standoffs. Our ship needs yeomen, technicians, bartenders and counselors, too!
Eager to get started? The Sally Ride will be spending the next couple of weeks in drydock at ESD, finishing some minor refits and taking on crew. Once you have posted your character introduction in this thread, feel free to hop on the SFRoleplay channel and hunt around for a pre-launch pickup scene. It's likely that new crew members, while moving into their quarters or exploring the ship, would run into each other and strike up a conversation.

Two side notes:
- If you are interested in running one of our events, come up with a scenario and let us know! I personally would love for lots of people to get to play the Q.
- I'm looking for a few particularly solid roleplayers for a secret project. If you're interested, please message me PRIVATELY so that we can discuss the details.
