SWTOR going F2P

Well this was certainly a surprise. I wasn't expecting this so soon but I think this can only mean good things for KoS and LoS.

I honestly expected them to wait at least a year.

I hope going by the F2P doesnt diminish quality over quantity...or have the game suffer cause of it :/

Just goes to show what happens when the developers and producers willfully ignore what the community requests (and sometimes demands). I feel pretty strongly that they deserve this; it's just too bad it won't be more of an example to other producers and developers.

I've been expecting this for quite some time as well. :( The Devs have been getting pretty desperate with all the subscription cancelling that's been happening. You'd think they'd figure out they needed to start updating content much more frequently than they have and to actually include a lot more in the way of updates with each patch. The paltry stuff they've been giving us has caused a lot of problems for most guilds because the devs have been basically pushing people out the door. They have been willfully ignoring all the "feedback" subscribers have been sending their way for an extended period of time and as usual they are now happy to hear any "feedback" we may have with this new announcement? Unfortunately, they do deserve whatever happens but I will continue to play and hope for the best.

Yes, it's not going to happen until the fall but if you'd like to join KOS (Republic faction) or LOS (Empire faction), choose "The Harbinger" for your server, that's where both guilds are. If you have any problems getting an invite if you do decide to start playing, just PM me and let me know when you usually log on and I will log on during that time and send you and invite! The game is fun to play in spite of all the issues.

This might actually be a good thing for SWTOR. I'm not a fan of the F2P model myself. But, it does usually garner more revenue for the hosting company and it allows people who wish to casually play without having to up a sub fee every month. So, I think it could turn out to be a good thing for the game if they can do it right.

Here's a link to what the differences are going to be between those who are subscribers and those who are going to play the F2P version of SWTOR:

http://www.swtor.com/free/features

I think it's following a similar format in what's limited in the F2P versions of other games with the exception of having access to all the classes and story lines. STO limits you by allowing only 1 character slot in F2P, if you want to create more toons, you have to buy more character slots. I'm not sure if I think there's an appreciable enough difference in the 2 models but subscribers are supposed to be granted monthly "cartel points" and be given "backpay" in Cartel coins with which we can purchase items. Unfortunately, with their history, I am afraid if they continue with their normal pricing pattern of game items, the cost in points and coins for these new items will be so extreme as to be practically unaffordable. :pinch:  But, that will remain to be seen.

Yes, F2P is going live November 15th across all areas where the game is currently available. The F2P option information article also states that anyone that unsubscribed can benefit if they resubcribe before 12/20/12. They will get free Cartel Coins as well, just not as many of course. :)

Judging by what the amount of cartel coins I've got on the test server I think my 6 toons will be well provided for lol.

I'd love to have an article in the next issue of the Stonewall Times about SW:TOR going free-to-play.

Does anybody feel like they could write a useful summary of what will be happening? If so, please do let me know :)

Ideally, we'll need the article by 25 November for the next issue of the Times.

Thanks,
Ali
