I take this VERY seriously... my first toon had a different name for each progressive ship. That became a bit cumbersome over time (given how many ships he now has), but they almost all conform to my naming convention:

a.) Adjectives ending in -ous or -ess (Righteous, Courageous, Valorous, Sagacious, Fearless, etc.)
b.) relevant to the toon and career (Astris; latin for 'star;' Renegade, Pioneer, etc)

I've not used letters yet to be honest. I always thought it strange that the Enterprise was really the only proven example of this seen, despite the fairly consistent reuse of historical names by Starfleet (almost every original Connie saw life later on in newer classes; no letters though).

I'm a canon freak, so you won't find me naming ships lightly or outside of the norms. Nothing worse than seeing someone flying around in a ship with a hot mess name. It ruins the entire effect of the ship, and the person flying it.

I feel worst when they're largely serious names, just butchered.

I can deal with, or more likely politely ignore silly names.

But I swear I've encountered, and you know you have as well, the Rengade, the Braverry, and so forth. I like imagining they're inside jokes. That's my happy place.

I'm not 100% but I think it's because the Federation flagship always has to be named enterprise so they basically renew the Naval Commission Contract (NCC) number each time a new one has to be built and they only do that with the fleet's flagship.
As for hot mess names, my Orion slave boy on tribble rolls around in an Orion Marauder Patrol Cruiser named the Slovenly Concubine. ;)

I used to name every single ship i had during the levelling process but when i eventually hit VA i was moving ships so much and had so many on the go. I think when i finally settle on a "my" ship i will name it. Historically i have always liked Reverence for a ship (i think it sounds nice, though in my head it doesnt sound like a typical starfleet name). So if you see my flying a ship with that name it means i really like it :D

Ah, ship names. It's one of the best parts of this game!

For me, it depends on the character. For my main toon, Oren-De, I have a story built up around him and his crew. This has meant that the ship is always called 'Pandora' and that I try to keep the crew in a Phoenix-class escort as much as possible.

For my other toons, I tend to use ship names that fit with the career. For my Science, all ship names were derived from famous scientists, increasing in fame and stature as the ships got bigger. )However, I went through a stint where I remodeled him to fit the Doctor, at which point the ship became the USS Idris. :P)

For my budding Engineering captain, same thing. Famous engineers, though since there aren't that many famous engineers in real life, I tend to use Trek engineers.

The way I choose my ship's names are based on the Cosmic Era of Gundam Seed and Gundam Seed Destiny as well as from the Gundam 00 Season 1 and 2. Those are my favorite Anime of all time. I think it was appropriate to use the names from those because Star Trek and The Gundam Series have the same Theme. Space and Beyond! :)

My Current Ship The Heavy Dreadnaught Cruiser is Named U.S.S ArchAngel from the space battleship in Gundam Seed also known as the "Unsinkable Ship" on Seed Destiny. Although that isn't quite what my Star ship is at all. >.

I usually go with Mythological names, or names that I would give to kids lol.

For example,

USS Maiden Sari,
USS Nephilima
USS Lilith Eve

all mythological

USS Maribella,
USS Helena Agusta,
USS Magdalyne

all girls names.

For my Klingon toons I'm also following a mythological theme. Since none of my KDF toons are actually Klingon I created the back story that they were all Orion Syndicate-financed pirates and since they raided mostly human colony worlds they named their ships after mythological monsters from earths past.

I've got:
Cerberus
Manticore
Hydra
Charybdis
Scylla
Basilisk- for my Gorn of course.
Gorgon
Medusa
Chimera
Behemoth

I've renamed my Wells TSV twice now, first I named it the USS Chronus but in Greek mythology he was kind of a bastard so I renamed it the Nautilus.

My ship names are usually based on literature:

USS Saint-Exupery
USS Vonnegut
USS Steinbeck
USS Serendipity
SS Antonio

dragon lore:

USS Zhizhu
USS Serendipity (is a book about a dragon)
USS Qilin

or ridiculously vague Star Trek references:

USS Robbins
USS Ce Acatl
USS Proton

Also all of my registry numbers are part of ISBN's from books.

All of my ships are named after locations from A Game of Thrones and the subsequent books. I just made Commander so I've only used three at this point.

Starter: Winterfell
Cruiser: Sunspear
Heavy Cruiser: Riverrun

Whenever I get a new ship, I just crack open a book and check out the map. I'm not sure if I will repeat namesyet.

All my starships are named after summons from the Final Fantasy franchise (ie. USS Odin and USS Belias for my main and alt respectively) while all my small craft are named after airships/vehicles from various console RPGs (ie USS Strahl is my Delta-class shuttle and USS Epoch is my Aeon-class Timeship)

I'm naming my Ambassador Class Ship the USS Shrodinger after the temporal effect that happens in the mission. The theory of Shrodinger's cat is basically sort of a temporal/alternate universe version of the "if a tree falls in the forest, and there's no one around to hear it, does it make a sound?" question.

And in keeping with the general Greco/Roman myths and monsters of the world theme I have for my KDF's I'm naming my new Ferengi D'kora Maurader the Midas. Although I was also thinking the Avarice. Anyone know the Klingon word for that?
