How to take a Screenshots/Get them on the web

January 27 2012
I started this thread in order to help people understand how to take screenshots as well as possibly help with any issues anyone may have. Before taking a screenshot you want to check a few settings in game.

You must be in "Windowed" mode in order for this to work. If you want to play the game in Full Screen you can use "Fullscreen (Windowed)" and it will look the same. To change these settings use the ESC (Escape Key) and choose Preferences. Then select Graphics under graphics there will be a general area at the top (pictured in image below).

Ensure that you are either in Windowed or Fullscreen (Windowed) then proceed to the next step.

While in the game you can press Print Screen key which is typically located in the top right hand area of your keyboard by the "F12" and above the "Home" but may vary depending on your keyboard set up.

There is no visual que in game that a screen shot has been taken. Although you may see the screen jump slightly. If you want to take a screenshot without the UI (User Interface) visable then ALT+Z will toggle this on and off.

Once you have taken your screen shot it is automatically stored on your computer under "Documents" or "My Documents" (depending on Windows version) then in a folder named Star Wars - The Old Republic. Inside of that folder will be one named Screenshots and it should have all the screenshots you have taken in game.

If you want to post your screenshot on the forums there are free solutions you can use to host your files for you.
Once you have your files hosted you will want the url to your image and then click on the icon in the Boardcode section of a new post. Paste in the url and press insert and you are done!

Any questions, comments or anything you want to add feel free to post them and I will make sure to help with anything I can!

You don't need to be in full screen windowed mode to take screenshots. I've taken many many SS before going into windowed mode; but now that I /am/ in windowed mode, I can use the windows 7 snipping tool to take screenshots of cutscenes so I can have some pretty, high resolution textures in my SS. ;)

You can also get some nice, dramatic poses from snipping from cutscenes:

Though I suppose you could just use FRAPS to take screenshots during cutscenes. :3 (I've tried hitting printscreen during a cutscene and then just pasting the result into an art program because it won't capture SS from them, but they are all just solid black.)

I've heard it have issues if you were in Fullscreen don't know if those are bugs or not so I figured I would just mention it. Thanks for the clarification.

Thanks Jon for the excellent instructions for photo sharing. I am particularly appreciative of where to look for the screenshots after you take them. I would NEVER have thought to look in "my documents" for a SWTOR folder because my previous experience with screenshots from WOW was that the screenshot folder was located with the game files. Who'd a thought...

I recently upgraded to the deluxe version of the game and got a "holocamera" along with several other items. I used that to take a screenshot just to experiment and clicking on it caused the ui to disappear before it took the picture. Then the ui was visible again afterwards. I haven't tried it on a cutscene yet so that will be my next experiment. Thanks again for the info, it was most helpful for us not so computer literate folk. :)

You should make a thread and post some pictures and how they come out with the Holocamera as that was a really interesting feature for me. Depending on how it all works I might actually looking into getting the digital deluxe if it's still available as that seems like a neat benefit.

I'm actually not familiar with the Snipping tool. My fraps also hates SWTOR for some reason. The videos always come out audio with an oddly shaped frozen image. I haven't been able to figure out why.

The holocam is nice, but my issue with it is that it forces you into first person view and stays there after taking the SS and restoring the UI.

I believe the snipping tool was an under hyped feature of Vista (which I successfully avoided) I know under 7, you can click on Start and in your Search Programs box, type snipping. It's a quick and light program that allows you to take SS of selected regions.

http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Use-Snipping-Tool-to-capture-screen-shots

Mine defaults to a rectangular snip. I have the tool fastened to the start menu, so I just hit the windows key and click snip. It freezes the cutscene from where I hit snip and then I just drag the box over the part of the screen I want to capture and when I let go of the mouse button, I can either tell it to abandon the current snip by clicking on "New" to re-snip or click the save button to save my snip as a jpg.
