Thoughts on the upcoming Beta Weekend

November 21 2011
Hi folks,

I think everyone who registered on the SW:TOR forums before 11/11/11 will be invited to the next beta, which is this coming long weekend. I was wondering if there is any interest in trying to get as many folks as we can on the same server? I have read several previous posts about folks in beta and which server they are on which class they have played and so forth.

Leviathan (sp??) seems to be the most popular server but it is the one with the biggest queue, when I tried to log into it I was 3,496 in the queue. After 2.5 hours of waiting I stopped and selected another one. I eventually went with Canderous Orb (again sp??) Thankfully the queue was much smaller, I was 952 and it only took me 30 or so minutes to get in.

Since most of us will be playing this coming weekend (U.S. holiday?? what U.S. holiday??) ;p I hope we can get as many of us on the same server as possible. By chance did anyone happen to get a listing of the servers from the last beta? This might help in coordinating which server to select and to get as many of us on the same server as possible.

Just a thought as it would be great to play with some guildies.

Good idea, Van. I wouldn't worry about recalling the servers from last beta weekend though. Other than the ongoing ones (e.g., Leviathan), the others seem to change.

BTW -- during the last weekend, I only had a queue for Leviathan on the first evening. It wasn't bad for the rest of the weekend.

That's good to know about the server, I didn't try it after the first nite. Now to figure out which class to play...hmmm...

I'm SO down to get on the same server for this weekend! I too had issues with the queue for Leviathan so I played on some other server. But I too would love the chance to play some KOS folks in beta.

Will the weekend stress testers have access to the same servers as you regular testers?

Obviously i want to play with you guys. Preferably on the same side. Are you guys mostly playing republic or empire?

Hummmm, I am pre-registered since July and I have not received a weekend stress test invite, I wonder if they are staggering those out via email. Hope so, I want to test again and yes I am down on the idea of all being on the same server, I would love to test grouping

Woops, spoke too soon, just got my invite and RSVD'd already :) yay!

I'd recommend that when the servers open for weekend testers, people should come to this thread. As soon as someone creates a toon, be sure to post here with relevant details and other interested folks can follow suit. Does that work?

Works for me.

I am looking forward to The Old Republic, but have to admit that I'm not "blown away" by it. There are just some... to be polite I'll say "questionable"... design mechanics that, in my own opinion, will relegate The Old Republic as the pinnacle refinement and swan song of the last generation of MMO design instead of the dawn of a bold new era in MMO gaming.

If it weren't for the promise of BioWare's signature care to story, I'll be completely honest, I'd probably pass up SW:TOR because it's just a lot of the same-old, same-old. When MikeyNY told me about the "Legacy" system and the implementation of the "last name" as a server-wide last name, all I could think was, "Really?! What is this, Everquest?! This is utterly stupid."

For those of you who don't know, way back in the day, Ultima Online had the flexibility to create a proper name for your character (e.g. John Doe). When EQ released, they couldn't handle spaces in the name, and you had to achieve level 15 (an several-month-long process) to "earn" a surname that was displayed like a title.

I don't recall Luke having to become a Jedi Master before he became a Skywalker. I know this particular feature is such a minor detail, but to me it's indicative of an "old school" mindset that just saturates nearly all mechanics of the game.

If they were focused more on grafting an MMO onto Star Wars, there should have been an effort made so that we could make the next "Boba Fett" or "Han Solo" or "Qui Gon Jin." Instead, to me, it seems like they tried to graft Star Wars onto an MMO so you're going to wind up with a million "it3rw3bzNam3s".

I came up with the monniker "Dakon Kor" for my Commando character because it seemed so perfect in the Star Wars universe. Instead it's looking like I'll be stuck with "Kor" the Commando and "Dakon" the Smuggler. It just feels like something is missing.

Sorry... I'll get off my soap box.

I guess my point is this... I'm really looking forward to digging deeply into another series of BioWare stories in SW:TOR. I just wish it had a better underlying system than it does right now. You can bet I'll be playing when it releases,(and expect that I'll be putting in the better part of 15-20 hours a week), I'm just not chomping at the bit to play like I was with recent games like Assassin's Creed, Saints Row and am for upcoming games like Mass Effect 3 and Guild Wars 2.

Whoops I forgot to RSVP my invite. Guess that means I won't get in until the last 'wave' on Sunday so I think I'm just going to wait it out until release. Played a lil bit of beta already so no biggie. I'll let Skyrim suck more of my life away, before TOR does the same thing lol. Have fun everyone!!

I do expect this to be a grand year for the genre though. :)

Hard to complain... Depending on your point of view, this is either the best, or worst time, to be a gamer. So many fantastic games have been released in such a short amount of time: from Batman (so far the best of the ones I've gotten so far, in my opinion), Saint's Row, and Assassin's Creed, to Battlefield, Modern Warfare, Skyrim, SW: TOR, Diablo 3, Starcraft: Heart of the Swarm, Mass Effect 3, not to mention the two you brought up... it'll be a great 18-24 months if you've got deep pockets (or are willing to commit a large portion of your entertainment budget to your gaming addiction like Mike and I).

Yeah that's new. I a little wtf moment when that happened. Didn't help that their servers were being a little flaky when I attempted to log into the swtor site.
