Didn't they announce that ages ago?

Apparently stupid talk is part of PvP.

When I create an alt with the other faction i won't be able to fund my new toon with money from my main. That's annoying for a game where they want you to play both sides (why else would they create two unique sets of quests).

Well i guess in the various beta's it was on again and off again, now they have confirmed it as gone again forever.

More importantly than funding new toons, it means we wont be able to chat to set up pvp or raids.

That just seems stupid tbh. MMOs are suppose to be social and not being able to chat to a friend on the same server, just on the other faction, isn't very social.

I remember the early days of MMOs when you couldn't even have characters of opposing factions on the same server (I want to say WoW fell into this camp during it's early days). They were worried about "spying."

This does seem dated now though.

My nickel and dime. I'm glad they don't have cross faction communication.
I know I know I'm probably the only one. I only have one experience in MMO's with
cross faction communications and that is in Rift
You can do a /say or /y to chat to the other faction.
In pvp it's just horrid at what folks say back and forth to each other. Yes I can just not
read what is being said but when it's repeated over and over again...geesh!

Now I'm sure there are plenty of folks who do not act like this but it takes only a few to
ruin it for the majority.

Actually it depends on the game and how their open PvP Systems work. In Dark Age of Camelot "spying" was a real issue and they didn't allow you to talk to the other faction or have a character of another faction on the same server. People still did it using separate accounts across chat programs like mIRC.

With a REAL open PvP system you need a certain amount of privacy if your going to launch a surprise attack against the other side and people logging onto their other characters or whispering their friends to say "Hey guys, we have a force of 200 here and we're about to attack your epic keep!" really ruined that aspect of it.

WoW and games since really have lost the need for this but if SWTOR has any sort of open world PvP with real objectives to conquer that give benefits for holding and defending then you can't have cross-faction talk. Your Enemies need to be your Enemies and not your friends.

Yes but im thinking of the zone/fleet chat we currently use when we need one more for say an stf, you wont be able to do that in swtor without changing characters to get that last member for a republic flashpoint.

There was an update to what is actually happening:

Guys,

Let's back up for a minute and clarify what's going on here.

Nothing has changed since San Diego Comic Con.

As discussed at SDCC, the decision was made to separate the general chat channels by faction. However, this decision ONLY affects the planet-wide chat channels such as "General Chat." If you're standing next to another player (local chat), you can talk to them regardless of what faction you're part of.

The only thing we removed, as already mentioned at Comic-Con, was the ability to communicate with the opposing faction across the entirety of a planet to avoid the issues (like griefing, abuse, and other factors which led to a very unpleasant experience) which we saw way too often in testing.

We discussed the option of hiding the global chat and defaulting it off, but ultimately the ratio of negative incidents was too high to justify that. The reasoning here is simple: We really didn't want to create a game option that essentially says "[x] Give me an 80% chance of having an infuriating and annoying chat experience," and putting the onus on the user ("you can just /ignore them") is not our idea of a quality game experience.

Removing planet-wide cross-faction chat radically reduces the amount of reach a misbehaving player has before account action can be taken. We'll likely add the ability to filter local cross faction chat as well.

Hopefully that clears it up a bit. . - Georg Zoeller
