I've found that odd as well. Maybe people want to experience the force?

Personally I want to try all of the classes and don't want to committ to one class for the guild because I don't know what my main will be!

I was just checking out the KoS guild roster. Having 60 folks signed up is very cool, but I'm wondering why only one is interested in being a Trooper. What's not to love about heavy armor and a huge gun?

I'm as yet undecided, but just a guess: you can play heavy armor and a huge gun in just about every game out there. Maybe people want to try out what makes this game different from what they've played a hundred times before.

I will probably go for something with a lightsaber first. I have noticed a marked deficiency of lightsabers in STO....

I am still excited about smuggler. Trooper is ok, but BH was more fun. Jedi Counselor is good and Sith warrior I liked.

I most likely will be starting out with Smuggler and BH.

The trooper sound like any warrior any other mmorpg. Sith Inquisitor Assasin = melee (with cool lightswords) + aoe (the cool force) + sneeking around invisible. In lotro my first class was a burglar, because it was something different and cool. But it was to difficult for a first time through. So i ended up playing the class i leas expected, a warrior. So who knows, i might end up a trooper after a few months.

Figuring MikeyNY is going to go Force User, Trooper is all but certainly going to be my first character. Trooper, Smuggler, Bounty Hunter, and Jedi Knight are the classes I'm most interested in for sure.

That said, if SWTOR lives up to the hype in that each class is ultimately it's own sequel to KOTOR (story driven gameplay vs. lots of common mission/critter grinding), I'll probably play through all of them as "light side" as I can for the story.

In most games having to do allmost all the same quests again is wat refrains me from starting over. If most of the swtor quests are part of the class arc, republic/empire arc, become different because the choises you made, ... then i will be playing all kinds of classes.

I don't know any other "warrior" class that can tank, heal, and do mid-range cone damage (I'm talking minigun here!). But we're all (well, unless some of us are in beta, but then they couldn't speak to it anyway) running on the info that BioWare provides and it almost always sounds better than it actually plays. I can't think of an MMO that met, or exceeded the hype that surrounded its development.

Personally I plan on playing trooper or consular. I'm usually a healer of some sort in every mmo I've played. It'd be nice to have some dps ability too at the same time as healing power like the Cleric in RIFT.
To anyone that's played the beta or just knows for some reason, what's the actual healing ability of the trooper? I'm guessing it's much more of a buff-machine than a dedicated healer but I'm hoping for a true dps/healer hybrid. Any info as to how it compares to the consular?

This kind of detail tends to be covered by the NDA (Non-Disclosure Agreement) testers need to sign when they join the beta. This information may be difficult to come across until the NDA is actually lifted.

I wonder if the ranged dps trooper could be as powerful as a ranged dps consular ??

If a trooper commando with maxed out gunnery is almost always less strong than a consular sage with maxed out telekinetics, then nobody would play a trooper commando for the ranged dps. As far as i've understood all the info that's out there, not choosing one skill tree makes you inefficient. No doubt, they will have balanced it out. I assume that the commando will be more powerful in one situation and the sage in another situation. Purely speculative: it would not surprise me if the commando deals more damage but only to targets in line of sight and the sage deals a little less damage but 360 degrees.

On the other hand, the telekenetics is throwing a water heater around... Imagine telling your friends about this game: "I play this really cool jedi consular sage, i specialized in telekenitics." "Telekenetics?" "Yeah, it's like, uhm..., you know, i get to throw things at enemies, like... uhm, water heaters ..."
