I think perhaps there is an even larger group that has been disenfranchised than the international folks who are upset that they cannot participate in the contest.

They are a silent majority who take it as read that they cannot participate and do not complain one bit.

I am, of course, referring to the acutely untalented. Yes, that's right, those of us who have trouble with even the simplest smiley faces and stick figures are completely out of the running before we even start. We accept our fate gracefully and don't complain that the contest is rigged so that only the most talented will win. :3

xD

Just playing, I'm sorry. ^.^

Won't someone think of the untalented children?

But we don't know what the design tool will be, so you may be able to win even if you can't draw a smiley face without using a keyboard. :)

Actually that's what worries me. The ship design web site they had before was underwhelming, and only allowed probably

I dont understand why they dont just have some more contests. The Americans make the Enterprise F, the Europeans make the starbase, the Aussies/Asians create the Crew.

Because they can't afford the legal team.

Or don't want to pay for the legal team, anyway.

Guys, to go along with what we were saying about international issues and countries where these games originate from, there is another contest going on right now from Square Enix that is very similar. While it is certainly not as "awesome" as the Enterprise Contest, it is JAPAN ONLY, so I thought I would mention it for those of you outside of the US who are upset with Cryptic. This just shows that Cryptic is not the only one!!! :P

Link!

Edit: I didn't look closely, it's just from a Japanese fansite... but an interesting read nonetheless hehe. Maybe we can be less upset with Cryptic now? Just a tad? ;)

Yup, this happens ALL the time, and Squeenix is one of the companies that I was talking about earlier when I mentioned being shut out of contests from companies outside the US. As a Final Fantasy ho, there are a number of great contests I've been unable to take part in.

I promised somebody I wouldn't reply any more because it won't get me anywhere but ah well.

Just because it happens all the time doesn't mean it isn't wrong. In fact a lot of companies also manage to open their competitions up to everybody.

You seem to be focused on the law of the whole thing which is absolutely irrelevant to the discussion at hand. It's all about being excluded from taking part which they can easily allow us to do if they change the prizes to something that everybody can receive (in game items, for example) or simply make the prizes US only. Restricting taking part in the competition is a totally unnecessary action resulting in unfairness. We only want to take part.

Another game, which I won't shut up about right now because I'm excited about it, is running a competition during it's Beta stages which will reward the winners with both in game items and a fancy new graphics card. The shocking thing is if a none-US player wins the competition they simply don't get the card but will still get the in game items. You see how that works? We still get to take part in the competition, the fun is still to be had.

That's why we feel second class, that why it's unfair. It's an easy thing to solve why is it not like this now? I don't know.

Edit: Anyway, I was just venting anger and really it's misplaced so let's just let this discussion die because we're never going to agree and let the Americans discuss the actual competition and not the controversy.

Back to the issue of designing a ship...

...I so want to do this but not sure where to start yet. Off to do some digging in the intertubes. From looking at the gallery of current entries, there are some in-game designs as well as a lot of hand drawn ones and some low-res "paint-like" submissions.

BTW ... I will gladly donate the prize to the group for a fleet event related prize should for some bizarre reason my entry would win.

The number of bad and illegible entries only helps me feel like my chances are improved :-)

I did my work in Paint. It took me several hours, I tried to very precise. Also, I feel like this is a design competition, not an art competition. A well-drawn, simple schematic I would hope in the end beat out a fancy drawing that doesn't explain much.

Here's my design. I just wanted something that looked big, fast, technologically advanced, and canonical:
