STO v. SWTOR

January 21 2012
Do you play STO? SWTOR? Both? If so, how much do you play each? I'm just curious what the split here is going to be.

I know I used to play STO -- lifetime membership there. But since SWTOR came out, I haven't touched STO. I'm sure I'll get back to STO at some point here and there; I'm very curious about the FTP setup now. But Star Wars has been keeping me so occupied that I have spent every possible moment I could playing it. It's so freaking addictive and engaging! I don't think STO will ever be my main game again, but I will keep revisiting it.

Currently: STO 0%, SWTOR 100%
Future (est.): STO 5-10%, SWTOR 90-95%

Incidentally... just as an aside, the last logged in functionality is now in game and can be seen through the guild window. It must have been added during the recent patch. It certainly wasn't there beforehand.

Ok I think my guild window is broken because I don't see it unless it's a permissions thing.

I couldn't agree with you more DakonKor, well said! I'll try to remember to let you know how the BH "acquires" their ship as my BH is at level 13 and should be close to getting one going by when all my other toons have been given theirs.

I thank you for the offer but beg you no spoilers. My husband and I have an Agent/Bounty Hunter duo we'll be levelling up as we either finish up the Republic story, or need a break.

I haven't looked into the vent channel yet. In WOW, we only use Mumble/vent when doing dungeons/raids, not for general conversation but I wouldn't be able to pay attention to that, all the chat channels and the cutscenes at the same time. "Too old" to want to do that much multitasking..... :P

I still say that if the Council or Republic Army, or Bounty Hunter Sponsor (not sure if this is how the BH gets a ship, but its where my brain took it logically) can afford to requisition you a ship around level 15, they should be able to throw a speeder in the cargo hold.

Not to give anything away, but bounty hunters aren't actually sponsored for anything. :pinch:

Shh... don't repeat this too loudly, but I'm right there with you about Vent. I have a hard time multitasking in game chat and gameplay without trying to focus on a vocal conversation in a regular MMO.

With SW:TOR's focus on cut scenes it's downright impossible so I only use Vent when it's needed.

Well last night i was online from 9:30pm until 12:40am PST. I can see people coming in and out of the stonewall channel so not sure if any bug would be affecting me. I did see an officer ask another if they were there, but that was all I saw the entire time, similar to the night before lol. Someone here mentioned vent. Its weird, for me, I find vent very distracting because I can't hear the story, music, ambiance, etc when everyone is talking and for me that takes away from the game, while I do tend to multitask by reading the chat box while in a story scene. Regardless, I realize this isn't an issue for several others. Anyway, no one is to blame here, its just that anytime you introduce something that is not 'out of the box', like a created channel, its never going to be a seamless as a 'in the box' feature such as the standard guild chat and it does have an effect. I really am surprised Bioware would not have put in functionality regarding when someone logged in. That is so standard. Oh well, hopefully all these things will be addressed in the future. There are some really nice people in this guild, but it just feels very lonely unless you force yourself into vent. I guess everyone just needs to do what they are comfortable with. Its just a game after all.

Hopefully, I will be totally surprised when the time comes and find out it is all doable. Not looking good at this point though. :(

One of my annoyances about the speeder training cost is that where BioWare seemed to work very hard to minimize the 'grindy' nature of MMOs with the story and even with crafting. I found myself grinding the same space missions over and over to earn the credits needed for training and the Speeder.

I still say that if the Council or Republic Army, or Bounty Hunter Sponsor (not sure if this is how the BH gets a ship, but its where my brain took it logically) can afford to requisition you a ship around level 15, they should be able to throw a speeder in the cargo hold. I wonder if my first companion is still wearing the ridiculous get-up I wound up wearing for over 10 levels until the mid-to-late 20s. I need to get a screenshot to show everyone.

My Jedi Consular is my highest character at lvl 36. I finished the Balmorra quests with him which entailed freeing the city of Sobrik from the Imperials. So it was weird for me when I later got my lvl 16 Sith Sorceress to Balmorra to find that Sobrik was still in the hands of the Empire. I suppose if I had been levelling them together this wouldn't have happened and the events would have been linear. Oh well, live and learn.

I sent emails to all 3 of my congressmen and the 2 republicans both sent back replies saying they were dropping support for the bills which surprised me due to the current partisanship. Actually it shocked me in a good way.

And this is exactly why I am resigning as Captain.

I know you cannot please everyone, but some folks just have way to high expectations and dealing with it as a Captain takes the enjoyment out of the game. That is me being polite.

I've played characters on both Republic and Empire sides and I've found both sides to be really friendly and communicative. I have, admittedly, been playing my Empire toons quite heavily since before the issues on the Republic side appeared so I haven't had a chance to see any impact on activity on that side.

I think it's important to say here - noone should ever feel unwelcome on either side. If you feel uncomfortable about something that is happening in chat, raise it with an Officer/Captain in private. If you can't for whatever reason (not comfortable about it/none online/etc.) then send Zepari (or any of the new officers) a message here on the forums. It'll be addressed.

I do feel sad that people have expressed that they feel unwelcome in LoS, that they wouldn't put their toons in the guild or that LoS should be avoided for whatever reason. I have found the people in LoS to be helpful and friendly whenever I'm online.

We're all here for the same reason - to play a game we love in an environment that is meant to provide a sense of community and ability to be oneself.

In response to the O/P, yes the past few nights have felt like a ghost town for me as well. I logged into my Orrion character, posted a greeting in the Stonewall channel and got no responses. I started playing and it was a good 15 minutes before I saw anybody else make a comment in either the KoS guild channel or Stonewall. I was on Quesh at the time, trying to solo and I ended up dieing. Doogiegood and a group of his new guildmates happened to show up right then and they res'ed me. I hate to say it, but I was tempted to jump ship right then and there. I really hope this lull in guild activity is a temporary thing, because it felt really lonely the other night and that's not the kind of guild experience I want to have.

As somebody else said, the LoS side of our guild is fairly active. I dusted off my Sorceress the other night and played her for a while. The one thing I did find disturbing were people from LoS badmouthing KoS. It felt really uncomfortable hearing negative things being said by our own people. I realize some people are die-hard Imperials and some are die-hard rebels, but some people enjoy both and shouldn't have to feel like an outsider when they visit the other side. Just my two cents.

This is pretty sad and I'm sorry you had to go thru this. :( This is one of many reasons I will not have my toons join LoS.

Come back to the light side,,,,at least it's quiet over here.

It's been really interesting to see how this issue transcends party lines in the U.S. I've seen articles from traditionally right-wing organizations that make the same case (and even use very similar language) as traditionally left-wing organizations.
