Designing the Voth Ground Combat Experience

Hello all!

My name is Jeff “AdjudicatorHawk” Hamilton, and today I’m here to talk to you about the group and combat design of the Voth, as experienced on ground maps. To start, we began our research by taking a look at “Distant Origin” (Star Trek: Voyager, Ep 3×23), which introduced the Voth species. While the episode largely deals with Voth scientists and aristocrats rather than military members, it still helped us answer one of the most important questions when designing something:

“What defines the spirit of the Voth?”

When looking at the Voth as a species, our starting point was only one episode, so we had to look at what stood out about them and extrapolate from there. Their actions demonstrated that they were highly defensive, both culturally and militarily. While they vastly outstripped Voyager’s level of technology, offense was not their preferred solution to the problems that Voyager posed to them. They were also clearly very Science-focused – they had entire councils of elders dedicated to each field of Science, and their technology was able to transport an entire Intrepid-class starship. Their vessels were exceptionally large, and their cloaking technology was an advanced form of phasing not seen in the Alpha Quadrant.

So what did we take from all that? In combat, we want the Voth to feel defensive. The Voth aren’t waging war on the players, and the players aren’t waging war on the Voth – they’re just coming into conflict over their different motivations for being in the Dyson Sphere (you’ll learn more about this as you experience the story in The Sphere). Voth should also feel unique to fight against, using high technology and intelligent tactics to their advantage. Many of their powers revolve around shields, cloaking, and their own special take on Antiproton energy damage. All of this combines to form the framework of which we’ve created the Voth ground group. Let’s go into some details about what individual Voth are capable of!

Soldiers

Rank and file Voth conscripts and enlisted officers make up the backbone of the Voth military. These are the known varieties of Voth soldier you will encounter in the Dyson Sphere:

Voth Specialists are enlisted soldiers with basic Voth racial abilities. They are equipped with Voth Antiproton pistols, and are able to paralyze humanoids with a short-range, toxic spine projected from their wrists. In times of duress, they can feign death by shutting down their metabolic systems, causing them to appear to be medically dead without a close examination.

Voth Medics are front-line support troops who are tasked with the protection of their fellow soldiers. They use science-based abilities to keep enemies away from themselves as they attempt to resuscitate fallen comrades. When forced to defend themselves, they are equipped with Voth Antiproton Pistols or Voth Antiproton Sniper Rifles.

Voth Spec Ops Troops are elite melee combatants, making use of their physical prowess and speed to engage and disable enemy targets with tactical strikes. Voth Spec Ops make good use of Voth cloaking technology to keep them safe as they oppose their targets, while utilizing Antiproton Raptor Blades to deal out tons of melee damage.

Voth Strike Commanders lead from the front, protected by their bulky armor and their contingent of allies. They bring battlefield-altering powers to the table, including Dampening Fields and Orbital Strikes. Commanders are equipped with the Voth Antiproton Overload Rifle, allowing them to participate directly in combat as they direct their strike forces.

Bio-Engineered Dinosaurs

Not all combatants in the Voth force are so mundane, however! The Voth have bred and trained creatures we would only recognize as dinosaurs to use on the field of battle:

Bio-Engineered Dankanasaurs are small, raptor-like dinosaurs used by the Voth as shock troops and terrifying swarmers. Dankanasaurs are fast, agile, and lethal – while many enemies prefer either range or melee combat, these dinos are capable of dealing damage at all ranges. Their most dangerous attack allows them to leap on the shoulders of their victim and pin him to the ground, dealing damage while rendering the target completely immobile for several seconds!

Bio-Engineered Furiadons are larger alien raptors with higher cognitive abilities than the animalistic Dankanasaur. Bred to be perfect war machines, Furiadons unleash mortar fire and beam volleys from a distance, peppering the battlefield with damage. Normally, their vicious bite is used as a last resort, but on occasion, the electronics controlling their animal instincts short out in-combat, causing them to fly into a savage rage.

The Bio-Engineered Viriosaurus Rex is the pinnacle of Voth biogenic technology, towering above the trees and dominating combat. His scream pierces through the air for miles, summoning allied Dankanasaurs to protect him, while his substantial armor radiates Antiproton beams and Transphasic Chroniton Mortars at all nearby targets. This walking artillery piece is best approached only in a group – lone officers are advised to find backup from nearby operatives before engaging this king of monsters.

Mechanical Exosuits

Lastly, some Voth soldiers use bipedal, mechanized armor to augment their already-able combat abilities:

The Ceratopsid-class Exosuit is the original line of mechanized combat armor in use by the Voth military. These mechs are equipped with a pair of rapid-fire Antiproton Cannons, as well as a “Ceratopsid Siege Shield” which they can deploy to trade mobility for an ultimate defense against all incoming fire in their front arc. While locked down with their Siege Shield, they forego the use of their cannons in favor of launching a flurry of mortars from their back.

The Dacentrus-class Exosuit is an improved retrofit of the Ceratopsid-class Exosuit. Its cannons are enhanced with a “prolonged burn” mode, allowing them to create patches of molten ground under particularly hard targets. The Ceratopsid Siege Shield employed by the Dacentrus-class is enhanced with phasing technology which reflects directed energy attacks back at their point of origin when it is struck by them – so be careful when attacking it! Additionally, to deter bold combatants who have closed in to melee range, Dacentrus units are able to unleash an electro-magnetic pulse, as well as use a rocket-assisted low-arc jump to regain positioning.

All-told, the Voth are an incredibly varied group of combatants on the ground, capable of using teamwork and ability synergies to create interesting combat scenarios. The vast majority of their mechanics are telegraphed via animations and FX, allowing astute players to react to their abilities before they finish using them. Most important of all, the moment-to-moment combat of fighting Voth is fun on both ground and space – blasting dinosaurs and mechs never felt so good.

We look forward to seeing what strategies you' will come up with when fighting Voth, and also what stories authors will tell in the Foundry using them. Stay tuned for our next blog about designing the Voth’s space combat experience, and we’ll see you in-game!

So we've figured the key to beating no win is a ship with at least a LCDR Science BOFF slot because of GW1 and TBR1. I've compiled a list of Ships off the top of my head with a LCDR Sci BOFF slot on the fed side. (I'll keep updating as time allows) Can some one compile a list for the KDF and ROM ships?

Parker and the Ghastly Ghosts

The following tags can not be placed within a specific tag: center in color
==Ghastly Ghosts==

The Trinity was on screen one moment and then vanished the next. I requested a sensor scan of the area, as well as as review of all sensor logs prior to the incoming hail up to the moments after the ship vanished from the screen.

"Sir, the Ruane is hailing. They are asking why we have stopped, sir".

"Ask the Ruane to intercept us as quickly as possible and ask Capt. Fitzroy to beam over once they arrive. Send the Sensor data to my quarters as soon as we have something. Number 1 you have the bridge. Continue scanning for that ship." I ordered and left the bridge.

Something was odd about this little encounter and I intended to get to the bottom of it. I entered my quarters and as the doors closed behind me I felt a chill. "Computer raise temperature by 3C." I walked over to the replicator and requested my usual coffee. As it materialized the steam vanished and it froze over. "Computer, raise the temperature by 3C!" I commanded. I could see my breath at this point and it was getting damn cold. I walked over to the doors to leave but the doors struggled to open. I tapped my comm badge...nothing. Behind me I felt a rush of cold air and the doors slammed shut. I spun around and there he was, the ghastly ghost Captain of the Trinity.

As I opened my eyes I saw him staring down at me. "Captain?" I asked attempting to get up. He restrained me gently and I relaxed slightly. "What's going on?" I asked.

"We found you on the floor in your quarters, Parker. It seems as though you lost consciousness. Rest easy a moment, you are in sickbay." Stated Rufus. "What happened?"

"I...I don't know. I went to my quarters to read up on something...I can't quite remember what...I replicated a coffee...It was cold...the room, not the coffee." I stuttered.

"Well you have burns on your arm consistent with the hot coffee you were carrying. The cup was on floor near you when I came in." Stated Rufus. "The temperature in the room was fine when I walked in."

"...the doors..." I interrupted, "they worked?" I asked.

"Of course Parker." He replied.

The doctor came over with a hypo-spray, scanner and a dermal re-generator. Rufus stepped back, his eyes still locked on to mine. His comm badge signal went off as his ship tried to contact him. Tapping his badge, "What is it?" he asked. "Sir, we are getting some strange readings in section 2 deck 7 of the Phantom. It appears there is something going on in Captain Anderson's quarters. The environmental's are fluctuating pretty drastically, 1 second it is 21C then the next -6C. Sir, it's normal now." As the comm officer finished his sentence the signal was lost. Rufus tried to contact his ship but received no response...

Stay tuned for the next part...

While i couldnt condone acquiring a cd image of this game by nefarious deeds. I should point out fleet ops simply requires the disc in the drive or to be mounted on a drive.
So if you accidentally went to isohunt and accidentally downloaded the image of the armada 2 disc and mounted it using daemon tools and then ran the fleet ops installer it would work.

:P

If I knew what all that meant I suppose I could do that as well :) Since my technical skills around anything OTHER than physical Security software have dulled over the past several years I would need to read a "* book for dummies" to work all that out :)

Thanks for helping me to not download software and not install stuff on my computer.

Yeah, this is really more than absolutely crazy. They were planning for this for quite some time and made sure that no one could "interfere" with what they planned on doing. I watched this video from another site and was  dumbfounded  when the video came to the part where the GOP had quietly passed this change to the usual procedural way of functioning for the House back on Sept 30th (which is the end of the fiscal year for the government). They knew that what they planned to do would not be successful unless they made sure no one could call for an end to the shutdown except for a specific person (or his designee). I am wondering how the people that keep electing these idiots are feeling about how they voted in the last few elections because they are the ones that enabled this to happen and continue to enable the dysfunctioning government. The only problem is they keep trying to explain away what they've done and continue to do. Several Psychiatric Associations have come out and said a lot of these people are very much in need of mental help because of the way they think politically and what problems that way of thinking creates for the rest of us. It's more than truly sad.... :(

It's absolutely crazy, isn't it?

Even especially following our last election, I've strongly held my own opinion (and mostly to myself), the same opinion that this video ultimately validates as fact: We are WAY past simple discourse here. The extreme right is assaulting the founding principles of our Constitution for the sole reason that they loathe our not-white President.

I saw yesterday too that both Ted Cruz and Sarah Palin spoke at a Tea Party rally in D.C. chock-full of people hollering in the crowd for "Dictator Obama to put down the Quran and come out with his hands up." Needless to say that even if he was a Muslim, why the f* should that matter?

People are out of work, our economy remains in a delicate recovery. Say what you will about the current administration, but President Obama is not the guy to take the fall for all of this completely senseless bullshit, and he has negotiated and comprimised, sometimes too much with these jackasses since he's been in office.

I'm sad for my country, I'm embarrassed while the rest of the world watches us battle against our own seething greed, and maybe call it a product of media hysteria over the debt ceiling but I am genuinely scared over what the coming days will bring.

I'm with you Kasper, America needs to wake up. Here's hoping...

America needs to wake up indeed.

October 16 2013
Ideologically, I've been a left-leaning libertarian for a long time. I mostly identify with the Democratic Party(of the two). But I also fully realize and concede that there is corruption at all levels of government and on both sides of the aisle. Nobody is perfect and both sides have issues.

Lately, more so than usual, those that I have associated with in the past have taken particular interest in attacking Obama. The latest is over the Affordable Care Act aka Obamacare (just a slightly different version of Romneycare aka "Massachusetts health care reform" if, ya know, we're interested in the truth). People are certainly entitled to their opinions. Heck, they can even be vastly different than mine. I rather enjoy good, lively debates. But I have issues with what are seemingly intelligent people saying that America should wake up, that somehow trying to give healthcare coverage to the roughly 15% of American that aren't covered (aka the whole purpose of the "Affordable Care Act") is a bad thing.

Ironically, I came across a video showing what is really going on as far as the government shutdown. America needs to wake up indeed.

Yet more teasers for Season 8 Fleetie Darlings. These Voth ships look pretty cool, can't wait to fly one, or blast them apart ;)

DESIGNING THE VOTH'S SHIPS

The Voth and their ships are a paramount of technology, the result of eons of development. In Voyager, we saw a pair of Voth ships: a very small one and a very large one. (It should also be noted that the small ship was reused later on in the series as a Turei ship.) This limited palette of ships posed a challenge for creating a large variety of vessels, but opened up the door to allow for creativity.

To get through this challenge, we decided to start with research. Primarily, we took note of visual elements that were symbiotic between the two canonical ships. A variety of these elements were isolated and used to create a visual design language for the Voth’s ships. We created this language knowing that we would have to create anywhere from three to five new Voth ships. This acted as a strong stepping stone for deciding where to start.

Similarities aren't the only thing to take note of, but differences as well. Aside from the obvious, size and mass, we extracted more information, which laid out the ruleset for our wiggle room in designing new, interesting features. On top of that, we outlined a variety of things that we felt were important for filling the gap between the incredibly large and incredibly small.

The visual design language comes in a variety of forms: screenshots with notes scribbled on them, lists of descriptive words or phrases, and even white boards covered in sketches and lists of "Do's" and "Don'ts."

As a game, we also must take into consideration the needs of our Systems Designers in regards to ship-based powers. Sometimes art needs to compensate for "gamey" functionality, as it is important to translate certain information to the player purely through art. As a result, features visible on some of the smallest Voth ships are shared with some of the largest.

With the information gathered through research, coupled with discussion among the team, we set our concept artist loose. We sifted through piles of shape studies and sketches, and over time massaged the design of our ships into something the team was happy with. We progressively created higher quality concepts until we had enough to work with a predictable amount of precision.

In the end, we are happy with how these ships have come out, and Season 8: The Sphere is shaping up to be one of our best updates yet! We look forward to seeing you all in-game, enjoying the fantastic new Voth space content when it releases, and we hope you will enjoy breaching the hulls of these monstrous vessels.
