Re:ST:Pandora "Enter the Enhasan"

January 28 2010
Captain’s Log, Stardate 87706.8

I have now been in command of the
USS Pandora for more than 26 hours; one standard day on Enhasa. In that time, I find myself conflicted with regard to the crew. From what I have read and so far observed, they are incredibly capable and a credit to Starfleet. However, while the Pandora itself has recovered from the recent Borg incursion, her crew has not. I know many may find this a cold statement, but however tragic the recent history of this vessel, this crew has no choice but to rise above it or it will languish in mediocrity and self-pity. As their new captain, I am so far at a loss as to how to remedy the situation.

The doors to the Pandora’s conference room slid open as Redwing entered. Talona and War’en, who were seated at one side of the table, gave him smiles that betrayed their nervousness. Shrel looked up and made the smallest of acknowledging nods before returning to the data pad in front of him. Redwing took the seat next to Shrel and looked around, not really sure of what to do with himself.

“So… the new captain…”

Talona and War’en exchanged glances. “He seems… quiet,” Talona finally said. War’en just nodded and looked up at the door of the briefing room.

“Yeah. Too quiet, if you ask me. I don’t think he said more than three words to anyone who delivered a report to him yesterday.”

Shrel gave an annoyed grunt. “If only more of us would learn from his example.”

Redwing glared at Shrel and was about to retort when the doors to the conference room slid open, announcing the entry of Commander Oren-De. All four officers immediately stood at attention. Oren-De motioned with his hands for them to sit as he walked to the head of the table.

“At ease. Please, have a seat.” The officers nodded and took their seats as Oren-De did the same. He quickly looked over the datapad he had carried in with him, then looked up at them. An awkward moment of silence passed as Oren-De considered his first words.

“Allow me to open this meeting with good news. Given your exceptional service to this crew, this ship, and to Starfleet... Mr. Chet Redwing, Mr. Anden Shrel, and Ms. Talona Roberts, I have decided to promote you to full Lieutenants. Likewise, Mr. Lok, I am promoting you to the rank of Lieutenant Commander.”

The four officers looked at each other in stunned silence, then back at their new captain. Before they had a chance to respond, Oren-De continued, looking each of them in the eye as he spoke to them.

“Additionally, I am assigning each of you to the following positions, effective immediately. Lieutenant Commander Lok, I would like you serve as my first officer as well as formally take over as Chief of Engineering. Lieutenant Roberts, you've done a fine job as the interim bridge Operations officer, so I making that position permanent. Lieutenant Shrel, while you are a fine pilot, I believe your skills are better suited to Tactical. Finally, Lieutenant Redwing, despite your service as the interim Chief Science Officer, I believe your medical training would make you more useful as the ship's Chief Medical Officer."

Again, all four were in silence. Redwing was especially shocked, given that he had just been bumped up to, what he considered at least, a position of incredible responsibility given that he had only just been made a Lieutenant. He finally found his voice and somehow stumbled through his concerns.

"Captain Oren-De... I... thank you, but... are you sure? Wait, I mean... it's just that... uh... Chief Medical? Really!? You only just made me a Lieutenant. Um... sir..."

Oren-De looked studied Redwing closely for a moment before nodding and speaking to the group as a whole. "I realize that these changes seem significant and possibly... drastic. And yes, Lieutenant Redwing, had I been allowed my initial request from Starfleet, I would not be asking you serve as Chief Medical Officer. However, as I'm sure you're aware, the current conflict with the Klingon Empire, as well as Starfleet's other numerous concerns, has placed a strain on choice and availability of officer candidates. Therefore, I have had to make some difficult choices. However, I am making them after extensive reviews of your records and I have the utmost confidence that each of you will do well in these roles."

He looked around the table again. "Are there any other concerns?"

After another awkward silence, War'en finally shook his head and spoke. “Thank you, sir… for your confidence in us. We will not let you down.”

The other three officers nodded in agreement. Oren-De looked back down at his padd.

“I am glad to hear it. Now, on a related note...”

Oren-De tapped a command on the table display in front of him. The display on the opposite wall blinked to life, showing a slowly rotating M-class planet.

“As you know, we are currently en route to Kinet IV. It is the site of a Starfleet scientific outpost that deals primarily with studying the behavior of a nearby nebula that exhibits a variety of anomalous behaviors. There we will be picking up an addition to our crew, Lieutenant Margaret Matoya, who has been assigned to the Pandora as Chief Science Officer."

A woman's face appeared on the screen. She had a youthful and energetic expression on her face, framed by wavy black hair. A short bio of the woman appeared to the left of the name, but none of the officers read it, as they would be able to do so at their leisure when they weren't in a meeting.

"Following this brief stop, we will receive our standing orders from Starfleet. If there are no questions, you're dismissed."

The officers stood, nodded to Oren-De and filed out of the room to go to their posts. While Talona and Shrel proceeded toward their bridge consoles, War'en and Redwing made their way to the turbolift. Once inside and the doors shut, the two exchanged looks.

"I can't believe I'm Chief Medical Officer," Redwing said. "Our captain is an interesting guy."

War'en only nodded, not sure what to think of the situation. "Yeah. Real interesting..."

It's probably easier to look at my xfire profile however it does NOT accurately show my EF time. Multiply that one by about 30...probably more? Yes, I spent an average of 4 hours a day on that game for about 2 or so years. Not counting the time I was making a few maps for it.

Everything else listed there is about right. Well, not counting my WoW and Guild Wars beta times either.

MMO-wise, I started playing Dark Age of Camelot and absolutely loved it! The PvP was great as well as the PvE. Had many fully templated and levelled toons.

I started playing WoW after that...ugh. It was fun for awhile until they just kept adding new things every week for the 'serious' raiders. Then I just couldn't keep up because fortunately (or unfortunately as the case may be) I do have to work and I have somewhat of a life away from the computer (not sure that it will be obvious once STO starts up as I will be sitting here all the time!!)

Borg Invasion

January 27 2010
In 2409 Admiral Janeway took command of the biggest defense force ever assembled by the Federation to defend Earth against a Borg attack. At first it looked like the fleet was holding But the Borg kept coming, kept hitting us until our line broke. Earth fell along with Janeways fleet. All hope was lost.

......

The year is 2509, 100 years after the Borg invaded the Federation. What's left of Starfleet has set up HQ on the other side of the Bajoran wormhole. Extinction of the human race is imminent.

..........

Captains log. Stardate: 2509134

The latest intel on the Borg has confirmed what we already thought. The Borg have been building temporal gates through out the Federation and intend on using them to send ships back to 2409. This can't be aloud to happen. We are sending the last of our Starships to destroy these gates and stop the invasion of the Federation from ever happening. If We fail we loose the last of what we have.

End Log.

Captains log. Stardate: 2509204

The fleet has engaged the Borg. We've lost 20 ships so far and have been joined by Klingon and Romulan fleets. The joint fleets have destroyed all but one of the temporal gate complexes and are within 3 hours of the last one. If I'm right this will be my last log. Well in this timeline any ways.

End log.

....2409....

Captains Log: Supplemental.

We picked up what seemed to be the start of a temporal rift on long range sensors but it didn't last long. Gravity on deck 8 has been restored.

End Log

Re:Other MMORPG Experiences

January 27 2010
I started playing the old text MMOs (or whatever they were called back in the early 90's) and wasn't too thrilled. Not enough stimulation.

Then I found my first real MMO in Lineage 2. It was cool enough, I played it a while and kinda got hooked. I progressed and then hit all those damn level walls, and the 8-10 hour grind to get less than 1/3 a level...only to lose 4% experience when killed. Add the farmers and bot trains 9 player thick, I ended up quitting. I still have an account, and activate it from time to time just to play a little.

Then I moved to DDO. Another good game when I played, I didn't know much about the lore, moved with friends, it got old after a while. I went back recently and had some fun, but still wasn't what I was looking for.

I played COH, Age of Conan, and Second Life (it was similar to Lineage 2, don't know the real name...but you could fly and it was a free game) but still, just not my style.

I played WoW for about 1-2 years, again following some friends. I liked it more, but damn all the changes and the end game always being these hours and hours wasted in raids in the HOPES Of getting something, made me move on.

But when I heard this game was coming out, I pretty much signed my life away. I played (and still have thousands) of the Star Trek Card Game from Decipher and it was fun. I am hoping to actually do some of the "missions" from that game and face some of their dilemmas. We'll see if anything comes from it. I already saw the Crystalline Entity which was nice...except how it's farmed...

Re:Character Biography

January 26 2010

Name: Steven R. Rasilek

Species: El Aurian/Human

Age: 117 Years

Assignment: USS Deep Sky, NCC-74121-A

Background
Born in 2294 and raised on Alpha Centauri. Father (Calin Rokien) was an El Aurian refugee among those rescued by the Enterprise-B a year prior. Mother, Joanna, was human and served as a community outreach representative for the Federation. Following his rescue, Calin took residence at Alpha Centauri where he met Joanna Rasilek, where they eventually married and had 2 children.

Joanna fell ill to a rare nerve ailment while enroute home from a follow-up visit with a new race. She died in 2310 despite extensive treatment. Calin remained in Alpha Centauri, raising his 2 sons and giving them their mother’s last name in her beloved memory.

Aside from graduating with honors at Alpha Centauri University, not much is known of Steven’s upbringing at that time until he left for Starfleet Academy in 2350. However, Steven had seemed to take on his El Aurian side with regards to life span, of which his physicians predict would endure for several hundred years.

Early Starfleet Career
Steven graduated from SFA in 2357, excelling mainly in Astrophysics and Starship Engineering. He spent the first years of his career at the shipyards of Earth Spacedock where he participated as a systems design assistant in multiple starship construction projects. In 2365, he accepted a new assignment on the Enterprise-D where he worked among various science and engineering teams until the ship’s destruction in 2371.

Steven then took promotion to Lieutenant and a new assignment at Starbase 119 as Spacedock operations coordinator, meanwhile pursuing a personal construction project on the side. His resourcefulness earned from his time at the shipyards allowed him to finish design of the USS Deep Sky, an Excelsior class cruiser meant for deep space exploration and study.

Following the Deep Sky’s commission in 2373, it wasn’t long until Rasilek was assigned command of the vessel amidst a shortage of resources under the growing incursion of the Dominion into Federation space. The ship was then outfitted with weaponry vice its science equipment in hopes to benefit the war front.

Steven quickly adapted into his command of a starship through applying his knowledge of the ship’s design along with his interdisciplinary experience from his time on the Enterprise.

Wartime Tribulation
In 2374, while on patrol along bordering territories, the Deep Sky came under attack by a squad of Jem Hadar warships. She put up a strong fight before a Starfleet/Klingon Patrol group had arrived to assist. The Deep Sky was ultimately destroyed before the reinforcements could completely ward off the remaining Jem-Hadar ships. While Rasilek’s order to abandon ship was narrowly successful, nearly all hands were still lost while the Jem Hadar proceeded to incinerate many of the fleeing escape pods. Rasilek was among the 47 remaining crew that survived the onslaught, out of the 320 souls aboard.

Meanwhile, Rasilek’s father and brother had both been killed while visiting Betazed during that world’s invasion by Dominion forces.

In dealing with personal struggle over the loss of his crew, his friends, and family during the war, Steven deemed himself unfit for duty and he resigned from Starfleet in 2375 shortly after the non-aggression treaty was signed with the Dominion. He then took residence on Earth, a hiatus lasting for over 30 years.

Return to Space
In 2407 at 113 years old, Rasilek came to terms with his previous experiences. Growing bored of his civilian life, the stars called once more and he decided to return to Starfleet. Steven was required to take a series of refresher courses at SFA where he also took another degree in Tactical Studies. He once more became an officer in 2409, but with the rank of Lt. Commander. He was assigned to the USS Moontide, a Centaur class vessel where he assisted in defense and rescue during the 3rd Borg Incursion into Federation Space. Following the Borg’s defeat, he was promoted to Commander and given command of the ship by Admiral Quinn shortly thereafter. Rasilek accepted.

As the continued conflict with the Borg raged on, Rasilek served through several command assignments, and several ships including the USS Astoria, the USS Alero, and the USS Arroway. His numerous commendations on the warfront had promptly earned him the rank of Captain. As that tour against the Borg concluded, his new assignment had ultimately returned him to the Captain’s chair of the Deep Sky-A, a grand Odyssey class starship that bears the name once more.

Currently, the Deep Sky has since departed Federation space and, with Starfleet and its allies, continues its mission of exploration into the Delta Quadrant, operating strategically in exploration and diplomatic envoy in tandem with the USS Eno under command of Rasilek’s close colleague, Captain Arlo K’tzik.

Known fondly by his colleagues as "Ras", Steven is a noted and passionate musician of the guitar, piano and vocals, playing regularly with his crewmates within bands and other casually-arranged ensembles through their voyages.
