Harsh, hope you get it up and running soon!

I've seen a few rigs blow their PSUs, so I agree that's a definite possibility. Like gamerjosh says, I've tested this before using someone else's power supply; usually the power cables are long enough that you can sit the two PC towers with their open sides facing each other, and connect the 'borrowed' PSU's cables to your mobo & GFX card without having to physically remove it. A simple test (provided you can get your hands on someone's PC!) that could diagnose your problem in a minute.

Also, since it's so quick and easy to do, double-check your PC's fuse. Ya never know!

Best of luck! x

The power supply is a likely culprit, since there is no reaction to turning it on. Have you tried turning it on while looking inside the case? Maybe a fan will start to turn, or a light on the mobo will flicker?

I would also inspect the connections between the power supply and motherboard, check for burn marks.

A hard reset of the power supply may be in order also. Unplug it from the wall, toggle whatever switches you might have, and press the power button a couple times with each switch setting. Then make sure to put switches back to original position, plug it back in and try again.

Do you have another computer? Or a friend that would let you use their computer to test this?
If so, borrow the other power supply (assuming compatibility) long enough to see what happens.

Not a computer expert myself, but I had that happen to my computer this summer. After my computer-expert friend had checked it out, he declared that it had bricked--ie dead, with all the data irretrievable. That may be the case for you, but best to have someone look at it firsthand to be sure.

Computer Overheated, Advice Needed

September 28 2010
Hey everyone. Last night, I was playing a graphics-intensive game (Champions Online, which is on par with STO in terms of graphics requirements). We're in the middle of a heat wave in California, and my room faces the sun set, so even in the evening I'd say it was about 85 degrees in my room, at least.

While standing still in the game and talking with friends (I also had Chrome and Skype going), I suddenly detected a whiff of a burning smell. Right as I realized that it was probably my computer, my computer just shuts off completely. No messages or warnings, it just went out immediately.

Given the heat in the room and the burning smell, I figured that the computer may have overheated. I left it alone for the night. This morning, when it was much cooler, I tried to turn it back on. Nothing happened. No fans whirring, no lights or beeps, no response at all from pushing the power button. I toggled the power supply's switch, and still nothing. At this point, I unplugged the power cable and opened the casing. I only did a cursory inspection because I needed to get to work, but I didn't see any burn marks or melting on the motherboard.

So now that I've given you all the information I have, I have some questions for the computer experts among us. Since I'm not getting any response at all when I try turning the computer on, I'm inclined to believe that it's the power supply. Is replacing the power supply (a 500W one) a good idea as a starting point? Are there any other tests I can do, if that doesn't work, to check to see what may have been damaged?

The whole idea is that they made the leap directly from amphibians to humanoids in their evolution, so I wanted their reproduction to have some resemblance to amphibians, and in many of those species the male fertilises the eggs ex utero. I figured that, since in humans, the female provides more genetic info than the male, that there would have to be some way to compensate for the reduced number of genes in a male, ergo, three parents.

I'm not sure whether it's mostly due to the level of detail you've put into the Development & Reproduction sections, or the fact that Nathanites breed via threesomes, but this is an awesome species synopsis! :-D

Nathanites: Physiology, Reproduction, Development

September 27 2010
Nathanite Appearance and Physiology

Typical height: 170-200 centimetres
Typical weight: 46-92 kilograms

Nathanites are an all-male species of amphibioid homonids. They are of slender build, with short torsos and long limbs.

Their facial features are different from humans in many ways. Their faces fall low on the head. They have very large eyes, small noses, and full lips. They have deeply sunken cheeks and pronounced cheekbones. Two ribbed ridges rise outward from the tops of their eyes. These ridges continue past the hairline and flare out into the ridges of their ears, which strongly resemble Vorta ears. The lower edges of the ears bear vestiges of their in-ovum gills. Enlarged blood vessels are found near the base of the ears, which aid in respiration via the gills in ovum.

Eyes are humanoid. The hair of the head grows straight or slightly wavy. Nathanites have thin eyebrows. Nathanites have two pigments, cyanin and indein. The result is that Nathanite skin, hair, and eyes come in a wide range of hues, from green through to purple. Nathanites do not grow facial hair. Their only body hair is a usually large mass of pubic hair.

Internal physiology is similar to humans, though there are differences in the circulatory system owing to a three-chambered heart. Testes, though about twice as large as in humans, do not descend; there is no scrotum.

Nathanite Reproduction
Nathanites reproduce asexually. Though Nathanites are all male, they consist of three subsexes, known as the Hlys, the Hrywa, and the Liaru. All three subsexes are necessary for reproduction. Conception occurs through the external admixture of semen from each of the three subsexes. Enzymes from each of the three semen types catalyse in the presence of oxygen to form a flexible, translucent shell around the admixture. The result is an irregularly shaped egg about twice the size of a Terran chicken egg. (Nathanite ejaculate is much more copious than in humans.)

Within the shell, cells resembling spermatozoa in form but not in function stir the contents of the egg until the genetic material within coalesces to form a zygote. Maturation is rapid; within three weeks, eyes, gills, tail, and rudimentary limbs are present. Hatching occurs after about 13 weeks.

Nathanite Development
The newly hatched young are somewhat independent, like Terran ducks, and are able to crawl within a few hours. Like tadpoles, they have a long, broad tail that provides internal nourishment, and gradually shrinks to a nub within two months, by which point he can stand completely upright. (A common Nathanite expression is, "He still has his tail," meaning he is inexperienced or new to a task.) Their gills shrink at about the same rate as the tail, though vestigial traces are evident in adults.

Nathanite physical and psychological development are very rapid. They begin puberty at age 8, and achieve full height by age 12. However, it is very uncommon for a sexually mature Nathanite to seek to reproduce before age 16.

Like Terran turtles, Nathanites do not show physical signs of aging, like greying hair or wrinkles, later in life. Nathanites are able to reproduce throughout their lives. Nathanites have an average lifespan of 175 years.

Re: Getting to know you.

Hello--
I'm brand-new the past week or two to STO. This is my first-ever MMO, though I do play D&D on occasion. The one thing that got me into this particular MMO is that it's Star Trek. A lot of my dreams at night are set in the Star Trek universe. So I'm a geek even in my sleep. :-)

I'm 36, an artist and jewellery designer in Minneapolis. Real name is Whittier, most folks call me Whit.

I sing in Twin Cities Gay Men's Chorus and volunteer with a group that works on relationship development--of all sorts--within the queer community.

Beyond that, I spend a lot of time with my friends. I'm a part of a large poly family, and we spend what time we can together.

Really getting into this community.

Peace
W
