Re: Does anyone remember the first Star Trek RPG?

Your so right Virgo, FASA lost their license because of issues over cannon.

But, while it was active... FASA what the best source of ST info around. Playing the starship battle simulator was great fun. I always thought.... wouldn't this be so much easier on a computer....

Then 10-20 yrs later we get...

Yep, I remember playing it - was very much into RPG's during their height of popularity in the early 80's.

The one thing I remember was how detailed your history in Starfleet was. A few dice rolls (on percentile dice, natch!) determined if you served on a Constitution-class ship or wer stuck on some out-of-the-way starbase.

While I can't remember his name, my first character was head of Engineering. The man had no social skills whatsoever but his Engineering roll was a base score of 92 out of a possible 99 (00's were critical failures, if I remember correctly).

There was also a "ST:TNG" sourcebook but I think shortly after it was released FASA lost the Star Trek license.

Same here... I played the combat simulator... Which was awesome! :D Especially when you have a TNG ship creaming a TOS ship LOL

;)

I bought one of the character RPG's story-lines but never actually played it. I stuck with the battle simulator and I still have it.

I'll never get rid of it because it was so much fun to play when I was a kid.

Does anyone remember the first Star Trek RPG?

February 10 2011
It was a paper based RPG created by FASA Corporation and licensed by Paramount.

Here's a link that may help you remember it:
http://www.well.com/~sjroby/lcars/fasa.html

When I was a kid, I found this game... bought the basic kit, and some of the information manuals... including the additional material for the just released (at the time) Star Trek: TNG.

I had so much fun playing this game.... Wow, things have come a long way with STO when you compare it to this old FASA game.

I would be more than happy to head up a contest. I'll put together a proposal for how it will be run and what the judging criteria will be and then run it by you and anyone else who needs the details prior to kicking things off. Exciting! Thanks for extending the invitation. :)

Fiction Contests?

February 09 2011
Hello there. I'm returning after a 7 month hiatus due to some family issues but am excited to be back. I was wondering if we are still doing monthly fiction contests here? I did a quick search of the forum and see that May 2010 was the latest month to come up. Just wanting to confirm? And if they have ceased, any chance we could get them started again? I definitely enjoyed participating in the March 2010 event. Thanks all!

Re: What's the story, if any, to your ship names?

February 09 2011
I've got 2 toons:

Xander Conti, a liberated borg human. His ships were mostly named Infinitus. I used to roleplay on a website nation-building game called NationStates (www.nationstates.net). And my country's name was Infinitus, a nation with a history of genetic engineering. The Chancellor was Conti. So there is some history with him and the name there. It also gave him a link to him being a science officer.

Iolyn: He's an alien (still working on his back-story). He's on his first ship, the USS Charleston. I'm from South Carolina and will be using the names of different cities as the names of his ships (the order having something to do with history, population, cultural significance, etc.). I may even mix in the surnames of some of the influential people in SC history in there -- for example, I'm thinking about naming his Delta Flyer the USS Rutledge. I'll probably work in the South Carolina connection into Iolyn's backstory, too.

I *HEART* the Prometheus. I haven't quite gotten there on my tactical officer (I just started playing him a couple days ago). But If they're going multi-vector on it, I might be moaning more than squealing. Is it hot in here to anyone else?

Re: What's the story, if any, to your ship names?

February 09 2011
This is a really cool topic!

My main character is Jacien J. Mandrake; Jacien is a takeoff of my first name and my middle initial is J. for James. Mandrake was my favorite cartoon character from the 1986 cartoon series;"Defenders of the Earth." I haven't yet written a bio for him yet but he is gay and I fancy him sort of a Wesley Crusher or Mark MacHenry type, sort of more than human. He's also a Sci.

I won't count the starter ships but the rest are as follows:

USS Copernicus- Aurora class variant: named after a famous astronomer.

USS Prospero- Olympic class variant: named after a powerful wizard from Shakespere's "The Tempest."

USS Aurora- Discovery variant: Named after a powerful Ancient ship class in the Stargate universe.

USS Oberon: Luna Variant: (my favorite!) According to cannon all Luna class vessels are supposed to be named after moons in the Sol system. There's been the Luna, Titan, Chiron, and Ganymede to name a few. There are at least 145 celestial bodies in our solar system classified as moons so there was plently of names ot choose from. Oberon is both a moon in this solar system and is also the mythical King of the Fairies in Shakespear's "A Midsummer Night's Dream," as well as ancient European folklore.

USS Axiom: Nimbus Class: I chose this name because the deep range sci vessels remind me of the ship from Wall-E and I thought it sounded cool.

USS Mobius: Intrepid Refit: Don't use this ship much but this was another ship name I liked and always wanted to use. Its also the name for my Eng's
Emissary class cruiser and cuz I think the ship configuration fits with the name.

USS Wayfarer: Magellan class- Nickname for the Greco/Roman messenger of the Gods and patron diety of all travellers, Mercury/Hermes. I also did in in honor of a friend of mine from High School who used to be the head of our Star Trek club but has recently joined a cult and doesn't want anything to do with star trek anymore. The Wayfarer was his ship in RPG.

My Eng is a joined Trill RALH named Jadzaeus Vox (my own tribute to Jadzia Dax) and I used a lot of the same ship names that I did for my Sci. His current ship is the USS Morning Star (Soveriegn class) because that was the name I chose for my ship when my High School Star Trek club started doing star trek RPG.

My Tac is a joined Trill Commander named Cobalt because that's my favorite color. I'm planning on making a story for him involving section 31 and the name of his symbiote has been lost to time because it is so old. Cobalt is his intelligence codename and he's been on an extended deep cover assignment as a Mercenary in the Orion Syndicate. My BF chose the name for my Akira and I cant remember what it is right now cuz I'm at work but its Japanese for 'sure kill.'

Re: World of Tanks

February 09 2011
I've barely been able to play at all recently. I could barely even do the new weekly on STO last night without going past my bedtime. : / I'm going to have a new schedule in March, though. Hopefully I'll be able to get on more after that.

You can try all the tanks from a single account, in fact it's easier from a single account. If you save your gold and buy a month of premium, you'll get 150% xp and creds on whichever tank you use, so you can research different tanks faster. The time you spend on another account gaining XP and credits could be spent getting even more XP and credits on your first account and put towards trying the different tanks. (Unless this is just a tank slot thing, then it's just 150g to buy a new slot and you get that every day.)
