I will be playing the THIEF exclusively and I noticed from the poll, there are a few others here who will be also playing this profession. This particular profession is outside of my comfort zone because it requires a unique understanding of the play style and it's abilities and so on.
This is a collection of thief only material: for helping all of us who are playing this class. (Please post "THIEF" related material here and only if said information has a thorough explanation or is very self-evident.
We have all seen PvP videos with someone's personal music playing from beginning to end of it and these type of videos do us no good if the critical information...as far as weapons, skills used, builds or the how and why etc., is missing. Otherwise it's just a" showoff" video. Please feel free to add to this collection: I will be (copying / moving links and related info from posts to the appropriate category.)
FIRST LOOK - Trailerhen you create your character in Guild Wars 2, you are able to personalize the background story of your character. There are a number of race related questions, and one profession specific question.
In my line of work, it’s important to understand the power of... Anonymity – (MASK) My talents lie in the art of stealth, infiltration, and escape. I do not draw attention to myself. To protect my identity, I hide my face behind a mask of darkness.
Tenacity – (HEADBAND) I mean business. I’m the bruiser, the muscle, the bear you don’t want to poke. My headband keep my vision clear, no matter how physical I get.
Subterfuge – (CLOAK) With a well placed word or the flourish of my cape, I turn your attention where I want it. I am the master of misdirection and intrigue.
(I’m not sure how your choice affects your character or if it unlocks a different ability?)THIEF - Character Traits:• Deadly Arts: Power and Expertise.
• Critical Strikes: Precision and Prowess.
• Shadow Arts: Toughness and Compassion.
• Acrobatics: Vitality and Concentration.
• Trickery: Malice and Cunning.
http://www.guildwars2blog.com/arenanet/14.htmlINITIATIVE:"The Thief uses a resource called "initiative" in addition to mana. Thieves have a maximum of ten Initiative. Most Thief skills cost some amount of Initiative, with more potent abilities costing up to five, and none of the Thief's weapon abilities have a cooldown. Given the small maximum of Initiative, managing the resource is the main challenge with the class."
OBJECTIVE AS A THIEF: from everything I've read.
• Stay on the move constantly either by way of strafing / kiting / rolling etc.

WvW our job here is to quickly find enemies who are very low (25% - 33%) on health and FINISH THEM OFF! One of our skills
(HEARTSEEKER) allows more damage the
lower the enemies health.

When the guild wars 2
engineer realizes that there is a Thief, he is already being slashed from the back and one the floor. Confused at what has happened, the poor engineer’s life slowly fades, you see the assassin jumping into midair to reveal a piercing cold steel blade which will come down through the poor
engineer’s body.
This all sounds to be too dramatic and doesn’t sound real in an MMORPG, but it can be, especially if you have the right build for your Thief that I am about to show you. The name of this build is “The Hidden Assassin”. First of all, let’s start with trait.
Because this build focuses on DPS and stealth, all traits are all about damage and invisibility skills. First, add 30 points for
Deadly Arts for Dagger Training to increase 5% damage for the dagger,
Sundering Strike to make enemies vulnerable when landing a critical hit,
Venomous Strike to gain an extra poison damage. Then add 20 points for
Critical Strike for Executioner to increase additional damage when target’s health is below 25%,
Hidden Killer to increase critical chance to 50% when in stealth mode. Add 10 more points to
Infusion of Shadow to 2 initiatives when using a skill that gives stealth. This trait gives you almost limitless initiatives to activate killing skills.
“
Hidden Assassin” build combined with the use of a dagger as the primary weapon set. In this set you have
Double Strike, an ordinary spamable attack to increase initiatives and prepare for a deadly blow and evasive skills.
HeartSeeker, your kills skills. The less health the target has, the more damage you deal. Another DPS skill used is
Leaping Death Blossom, which deals large amounts of damage to your opponents and causes them to also bleed.
Dancing Dagger, when activated, throws a dagger crippling your victim. This skill is designed to make sure your victim does not succeed in escaping his domed fate.
Cloak and Dagger is a combo skill which will be explained later on in the post. The last skill gained is
Backstab, as the name already quite straightforward, you deal large amounts of damage to your opponent when strikes come from the rear, strikes will be doubled!
Go for
Hides in Shadow as your healing skill. This skill allows you to disappear within the shadows regeneration (HPS) and remove negative status effects such as burn, poison and bleed. Choose
Assassin Signet as your first utility skill giving you 150% more damage on your next attack. The 2nd utility skill is
Shadowstep which instantly moves you to your start location and removes 3 negative conditions.
Skale Venom afflicts venom damage upon your next 3 attacks weakening the targets. Finally the elite skill to use is
Basilisk Venom. This skills turns your victim into stone.
This build is effective against all professions except the soldier class – Guardian and Warrior, because they have high HP and defense but it does not mean a Thief can’t do a thing to these classes. Guild Wars 2 Thief is still able to slay them but may not be done in one combo attack. The best would be to target other professions or classes instead. Now here's the skill rotation you should be looking at.
First start imbuing your weapon with
Skale Venom then
Shadowstep instantly to your target, attack them 3 times with
Double Strike and
Leaping Death Blossom. Then go into stealth with
Cloak and Dagger, and add an additional 150% damage with
Assassin Signet and activate
Backstab. This combo deals heavy damage to the enemy and to end the fight, use
HeartSeeker which deals and increasing damage to enemies with low hp. With this build, I guarantee you that no one is able to stay on their feet.
RECOMMENDATION: When in the middle of an epic fight, always keep in mind that the Guild Wars 2 Thief is not born to take a lot of damage. Using
Shadowstep effectively to escape from fights could just save your life. Also heal and go into stealth mode often with
Hides in Shadow and then target your next victim. Your chance will come again to slay your next enemy because you are… “The Hidden Assassin”.
PS: If those of you are internet savvy and can find information on the THIEF buried in the deepest archives of the internet...please help find this crucial information for this class. What I'm hoping to find is the very rare tidbits that are not commonly known to the general public where the thief is concerned. (If you ran across information such as this....please post it here.)
Thank you for your important contribution. :)
