Re: City of Heroes is Shutting down

I'm sorry to hear that your fist MMO is shutting down, Geo. Like you, I have a special connection with my first MMO: Dark Age of Camelot. Though EA, the company that bought Mythic Entertainment, (the original developers), have elected to keep the servers on the eleven year old game up and running for the three or four thousand active players, everyone knows that there are fewer days ahead than there are behind, in the official life of this terrific game.

At some point, loyal as the company has been to the playerbase, business sense is going to kick in, and it'll be a devastating day for me. Luckily, in our case, there are private servers that some die-hard fans have put up, that will allow for continued gameplay, long after the game is officially shut down. I don't know much about the tech behind CoH, but I suspect that since the announcement, someone in the community has likely undertaken an effort to get a server running, if it's possible. Here's hoping, for you and all of the other community members! Hopefully NC Soft will be gracious enough to leave any private servers that pop-up, alone, for the community to enjoy.

This whole thing gets me thinking about the longevity of STO, and what will become of it once the servers are ultimately shut off. Considering the amount of money (in the hundreds or thousands for many), that people have unloaded on lockboxes, C-Store items, etc, I would like to see them release a server application with all of the in-game items unlocked on the client side, when the time comes.

I'm not terribly tech-savy, and what I'm suggesting is likely a pipe-dream, but with customers, on average, dumping so much more money into their MMO experiences these days, beyond the traditional cost of the box and subscription fees, I'd like to see gaming companies give something back to their customers and supporters, at the end of the game's life.

I'm curious as to how you all feel...!

and 6 weapons for your ship.

Six being the bare minimum number of weapons on a Tier 5-or-higher ship, being the logic?

Kas, who was not around for those discussions.

The full set you're allowed is actually per character, not per member as well. So if you have characters in Stonewall Fleet, Deep Space Stonewall and House of Nagh reD you can outfit those as well.

To clarify: what you actually get access to as a full member is a full set of equipment for one ship and one officer. So you get a weapon, shield, and armor for your captain, and a shield, engine, deflector, and [strike]6[/strike] 8 weapons for your ship. Oh, and a ship, obvs.

You might have already known that but I wouldn't want someone to see "1 item per member" and think they would have to choose between getting a gun and getting armor or something.

Hi Akurie!

As I mentioned to you online:

Your offer of donations is very generous - fleeties can always contribute to any projects for the starbase when they are up.

Promotions to fleet membership happen within 14 days of your joining - after that point, fleet requisitioning can be taken up with one of the officers.

Welcome to the fleet!

After a lil over a month NcSoft finally responds and this is what they had to say ...

City of Heroes® Players and Fans,

We wanted to let you know that your voices have been heard and your concerns have been taken into serious consideration. We appreciate the overwhelmingly constructive and positive messages in the emails, notes, and packages you've sent in support of the game. It has not been an easy decision for us to close Paragon Studios® and prepare to shut down City of Heroes. We've exhausted all options including the selling of the studio and the rights to the City of Heroes intellectual property, but in the end, efforts to do so were not successful. City of Heroes has a special place in all of our hearts, and we want to ensure its reputation and the memories we share for the game end on a high note.

Once again, we will be holding events throughout the process of preparing for the game's end, and we encourage players and fans of the franchise to join forces and enjoy their time in a game that we've enjoyed supporting for more than eight years.

The NCSOFT® Team

**read between the lines** Please stop sending us mail, petitions and what not we dont give a damn what you want our decision is final go frak yourselfs

Re: Stonewall Recipe Exchange Thread

October 01 2012
My favorite recipe in the world is for a home made pizza... one that needs to be divided up and served at a potluck, with minimal per person consumption due to extremely high fat ratio

First and foremost, every grocery store has refrigerated pizza dough.

1 thin crust pizza dough canister
1 sweet onion diced
1 green pepper diced
1 lb. cooked crispy bacon, broken to bits
3 cloves crushed garlic
2 cups mayonnaise
1 lb. shredded swiss cheese

layer all ingredients on a greased pan with crust down first, and cheese last

bake at 350 for 10-15 min until cheese is golden on top!

Eat like you mean it! Seriously!

ALERT: Comms array overload

October 01 2012
A few hours after Stacy is taken into custody, a massive power surge rips through the ship's communication array. The overload emits a tremendous burst of noise through subspace, audible even over combadges, and severely damages the ship's communications equipment. Engineers quickly determine that the surge was triggered deliberately by a hidden device attached to the array. While they can't determine when the device was put in place, they do note that it was attached to a timer and a signal receiver that could periodically have been used to delay the timer, a little like the snooze button on an alarm. It's either a dead-man switch, or it was deliberately designed to look like one.

Communications officers say that the signal will almost certainly be picked up by anyone within several light years, giving away the ship's location at the time of the surge. However, as the ship was at warp at the time, and is still following a circuitous path with emissions minimized, the signal can't necessarily be used to pick up our trail. They also note that the damage from the surge will limit communication to short range only.
_____

OOC: Told you there'd be alerts popping up! You can investigate the device, look over logs of the signal itself, ask Stacy about it... anything you can think of. Make sure to notify anyone who doesn't check this board often, too, in case they're curious.

Event #5 report

September 30 2012
An act of sabotage aboard the USS Sally Ride turned a routine transwarp jump into a disastrous plunge to the far side of Klingon space. The ship was crippled and her captain put in a coma, and now the remaining crew must find their way back to Federation space, pursued by a mysterious flotilla of heavily modified warships. Worse, continuing sabotage threatens to reveal them to their enemies. There is a spy aboard. Who can be trusted?

Between the scans of the flotilla, the debris of the main deflector, and the device recovered from the warp coil, the crew put together a profile of the technology that is being used against them and ran an internal scan of the ship. There were Borg devices present in the quarters of liberated Borg crewmen (including Seven and Eris 8), but also, surprisingly, a human engineer: Lieutenant Stacy. A small group comprising those Borg officers, acting captain Orenn, ship's counselor Kelsan, and the nearest redshirt to hand went to search her quarters.

Kelsan and Orenn spoke to Stacy, while Seven and Eris minutely scanned the room. They discovered a cache of components from multiple technological sources in various states of deconstruction, as well as a shielded hand phaser. Stacy explained that the components were simply things she had picked up in Engineering and wanted to think about during her off hours, but aspects of her story were inconsistent. She was, of course, cleared to carry a hand phaser, but keeping it in her quarters was also an unusual choice. Orenn made the choice to have her placed in detention.

At this point, knowing that bioscans all over the ship had been plagued with anomalies, Kelsan thought to try a lower-tech solution: a simple blood test. Without announcing her intentions, she replicated a hypodermic and drew blood from the engineering officer, at which point Stacy's entire demeanor changed. It quickly became apparent why: though apparently human, her blood was green. A scan revealed Orion biochemistry -- it's still unclear why bioscans of her have always turned up human.

Her cover blown, "Stacy" -- she still refused to reveal her name -- became aloof and sarcastic. She claimed to belong to the same organization whose flotilla of modified ships has been chasing the Sally Ride across Klingon space. She bragged that by simply repurposing new technology rather than prying it apart to fully figure out why it works, her organization can make useful tools out of salvage at a rate that puts the Federation to shame. As for the Sally Ride, she eventually claimed that her group had little interest in the ship itself, and were instead taking the first step toward a grand sabotage of the Federation's entire transwarp network.

Most of the officers present responded diffidently to these threats, although Ensign Benton seemed not to share their confidence. It's clear that they must warn the Federation of this plot, but Stacy seems to have little doubt that the damaged ship will never make it back to the Federation. It's a problem that is only becoming more immediate as the Sally Ride draws nearer to the fortified border, and her moment of reckoning.

OOC notes:

SPY SAPPIN' MAH DEFLECTOR!

Now that I've got that out of my system: again, what a great night! We're drawing closer to the end of this arc, so there may be a few more reports posted this week as the pace of events speeds up. Feel free to respond with your own ideas and in-character actions or reports.

  • If you want your character to question Stacy while she's in custody, get in touch with @gettorix and set up a scene!
  • If you have story ideas for our next arc, now is a great time to contact me and pitch them. I'd be happy to have you Q your own story, or just come up with the scenario and have me run it, if you would prefer.
  • Be coming up with ideas on how to make it past the patrols on the Klingon border. You're going to need them very soon.
  • I went back and edited the last report to reflect Eris's name change.

Yenzoc's Report [29 Sept]

September 29 2012
OOC: I have a meeting this evening and will not be able to do the roleplay this evening. However, there was a report I had wanted Yenzoc to present this evening, had there not been this schedule conflict. So (hoping it's not too late), I'm posting this report here to the players in advance of this evening's roleplay.

IC:
Immediately after I left our last officer's meeting, I had an epiphany regarding the silicon-based technology.

I realised that we are well aware that certain factions have been re-engineering Borg technologies for use on their vessels. I also realised that we have been running on an assumption regarding the Borg that may not be accurate. We know the Borg assimilate organic--carbon-based--lifeforms, but what if they are capable of assimilating inorganic life forms as well? Given that silicon has been used in the manufacture of computer circuitry for centuries, it stands to reason that the Borg would at least have a certain affinity for silicon-based lifeforms--like the Horta.

Let us presume that the Borg have been assimilating Horta, and modifying them such that they take the physical form we saw on the ships. To what end? We know that the Borg have a predilection for cutting portholes directly into bulkheads as a means of boarding a vessel. The acidic compounds inherent to Horta biology would make quick work of dissolving a ship's exterior so as to create a porthole.

As to what ends the Klingons--assuming they were Klingons manning those vessels--would use this particular technology, I have not come to a conclusion. Likewise, I have not had the opportunity to consult with the ship's experts on the Borg to determine the likelihood of this scenario. Nonetheless, it is the most reasonable conclusion I have been able to draw.

I submit this report for your consideration, and hope that it sheds some light on the mystery surrounding our attackers.
