Re: [Event] Tribble Soccer!

October 19 2012
Unfortunately, there isn't going to be much soccer going on.

I tried this out with a fleet captain shortly after we unlocked the Tribbles for our starbase and it seemed to work, but after receiving a message from Brandon telling me that most, if not all, of the tribble are client side and not sever side (meaning the tribbles you see and move aren't the same for everyone else in the same instance) I tried it out again with Ozy. It just didn't work. There were a couple times that it appeared to be working, but before long the tribbles we were seeing were completely different.

I still completely plan on hosting the event and we can have a good time kicking tribbles around, but I think this will end up mainly being a social event for everyone to chat, get to know each other and bond a little. I'll be on Vent, as well.

While this may be disappointing, I'm going to start running my own weekly events on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. I'm going to go for a variety of events and try out a few different ideas I've had over the years. Hopefully, some of my future events will be much more interesting!

Okay a fleetie had a BRILLIANT IDEA .. to make this even better ...

We center up the tribble lot .. then the team with the most in a goal wins .. would certainly speed up the action and defense points etc .. and provide more strategy for the game .. I LOVE IT!

(Still want team uniforms LOL .. but the volume of pinballs aka tribbles would make this interesting .. a rule would be NO REMOVING A TRIBBLE from a goal ... unless we created a deathmatch veriosn or whatever .. again more possibilities we can try out)

Addiotionally this fleetie said instead of centering them make folks get them from wherever they lie and put in a goal .. a way to CLEAN UP the base... another brilliant idea.

VERY cool Ozy

Thanks Geo :)

Awesome keep it up, I can not wait to see how it all comes out!

I'm getting there, one block at a time, lol

VERY NICE Ozy! It is going to look absolutely WONDERFUL when it's finished. Where did you learn how to do these kinds of things? I would be interested in learning how to manipulate graphics like many of you do to make these really impressive and useful photos/media presentations

I first started getting quite creative when Gmax and the BAT tool were released for Simcity 4, it led me to design buildings and objects that I later exported into the game for use in a city journal I updated weekly. I loved SC4, and from it I delved into 3DS MAX (My favourite piece of creative software ever), Photoshop, Photoimpact and many other programs related to architecture. Like my Galaxy Class Interior Renders and Wonders they all came from SC4. I think so long as you have the patience and the drive to learn, you can take on complicated programs and be as creative as you like. I for one am the type of person that has to act on my imagination. If it's in my head I simply have to make it real.

Wow! Can't wait to see the finished product!

I'm quite surprised how many systems there are in STO by doing this, the universe in-game seems so much smaller. I guess that's due in part because all these systems aren't really utilised.

It looks stunning. When it's finished, I hope the devs see it and somehow manage to incorporate it into the game.

That would be pretty wild!

This map is totally sick. In my head I'm already browsing through it as a 3D model! (a la astrometrics room :-D)

One question though, what is this "Sol" place, and why has it replaced Qo'nos as the center of the universe? Oh, NOW I get it, it's a bullseye on a targeting map! Qapla!

a few more tricks up my sleeve in workin with the map, one may involving omitting Qo'nos.. LOL ;)

and here's an update:

*Updates*

Argelius altered, now all upper case.
Donia height adjusted.
Pi Canis sector block added
Cygnus sector block added (Well I know this is a bit of conjecture, but until recently Betazed existed between the Cardassian Sectors and Sirius on the in-game map, and apparently Betazed will appear in a new sector block soon.Betazed
Klingon Sector Block Colour established
Beta Ursae and Alpha Trianguli Sector block locations established.

*Future Editions*
Volumetric Light to add spheres of influence (Fed, Klink, Romulan, etc)
Romulan Neutral Zone
MOAR sectors

So I was excited when nick announced the tribble soccer and maybe I am brain f*ng this to death but it has so many possibilities .. Bear with me for some ideas.

Tribble Soccer Rules Proposal

3 person teams each must be wearing their teams colors by visiting a tailor to temporarily adjust your uniform. Teams may play shorthanded. (saying 3 cause 5 may be hard to muster depending on time and then also lookign to future and smaller fleets and possible server event hosted by us)

Team play is for 2-4 periods each consisting of 5 minutes each.. with a 3-5 minute break in between. (these quantities should/could be adjusted once we see how it goes a few times)

Use of ventrillo is encouraged and each team should choose their own channel for communications. (therefore we should never see 4 persons in those channels)

An official referee in WHITE BLACK uniform combo will type out goals and call halts in play. (GOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAL) ...Therefore no team colors are allowed to be WHITE/BLACK combos even though those look bad arse (maybe solid white ref could work).

A universal chat channel should be established for game play. --- reason is ... once we get rules and things worked out amongst our fleets .. this could be a dern fun server event our guild could host every so often. (have done this with eq2 and snowball fights for 7 years and it gets to be quite fun). The invites to our starbase would require volunteers to aid us in this if made public .. but we got the peeps to do this.

Once our fleet got down the rules and possible cheating problems that can occur .. we could test it out with invites to general .. then work through issues we find .. and amend rules ..then eventually possibly do a shard wide bracket tourney ...

I have found you may even get donations for prizes if trusted .. so by doing a small tourney we could build trust that way that could lead to some donations out of fleet I am not talking tholian web cruisers to each team member .. but there are possibilities ....

One concern would be if you invite someone to our starbase .. can they be kicked if rude?

I have probably missed a million things I know are in my head .. but wanted to get this idea out there ....

(like no introducing/kicking a second tribble into play lol - or maybe that is a new rule that after 3 minutes of play a second ball must be defended and scored with kinda like pinball extra ball .. could be fun)

Many possibilities in this!

Addendum

After typing this out reading it for 10th time and thinking more .. some additional items.

1) After goal is scored time halts till the tribble is 'placed' back in center play field and players await the whistle command from ref .. if a player kicks the centered ball before the whistle command is given then the other team gets possession and the opposing player must back away 5m? from the person with the 'throw in'? just spitballing this idea.

if anyone would like to join me in practice for this event ... lets plan to do so on main fleet starbase this friday the 19th at 3pm EST .. should be not to late for our welsh and UK friends ... we can muss around for an hour or so .. sorry cannot invite kdf toons to this practice but you can bring a fed alt!

Will see about doing one at maybe 8pm est as well .. but someone else would have to organize that team practice session.

I know the main event is coming up too soon for this .. but just a thought for a possbile 2nd time in doing this .. is to assign teams ahead of time and possibly have folks hit the tailor to try to go with a certain color for each team ... would be kinda cool

Also folks just wanting to watch and dance could 'paint' themselves up in team colors if they knew the teams and colors ahead of time .. (cheesy grin)

And oh yeah I LOVED getting my fleet email for this!

Apologies for the typo, I've been hanging out with my bud Rik too much lately!

And yes, also heard good things about mumble, but never tried it personally. I glanced through their feature set and didn't see anything distinct from TS, but it's probably also worth a look by the testing team! ;-)

Nik: I'm aware of Jabber the original XMPP messaging protocol (my old org used it before SIP came along), but I'm not aware of any client being released by the jabber.org organization, although there are a number of jabber-compatible clients out there. Do you know which client your friends were thinking of? As for Teamspeak API support, I couldn't see any explicit references to REST (or SOAP), but there is the php stuff you found.

Oh wow, I'm not sure what I was thinking. I meant Mumble!

Wow, love the enthusiasm and smart questions! Here are some responses:

Kasandaro: I used to be a VoIP engineer MANY moons ago, and I'm amazed at the progress the technology has made in the meanwhile. We're using a Speex open source codec at maximimum-quality (32 kHz ultra-wideband), and it only requires 7 kB/s (although that's without packet, overhead, I'm pretty sure). Pretty incredible stuff. And the sys admin who's managing our virtual private server has spent a ton of effort optimizing resources, so our trials have been near perfect.

Nick: I'm aware of Jabber the original XMPP messaging protocol (my old org used it before SIP came along), but I'm not aware of any client being released by the jabber.org organization, although there are a number of jabber-compatible clients out there. Do you know which client your friends were thinking of? As for Teamspeak API support, I couldn't see any explicit references to REST (or SOAP), but there is the php stuff you found.

Zander Hawk/Starfish1: A testing team sounds like a great idea. In fact, if anyone wants to give it a quick shot, feel free to grab some friends and try it on my server, just mention my name if anyone's around (John/Araa).

Or, send me a message online (@strangetango) and I'll be happy to take you on a tour through some of the cooler features. I'll ask people to post their experiences here after they've tried it... good OR bad.

So, I thought I'd be a bit creative the other day and started a 3d map of the STO universe. I've only done about four sector blocks, but I'm enjoying interpreting the map a bit more colourfully than the standard one!

I've tried to be a bit more creative with the standard stars in sector blocks, by making some binary, trinary or quad systems to add a bit of variety. :)

Perhaps a testing team should be put together for this Teamspeak program, the gaming network may benefit, at least before Teamspeak's premium services arrive.
