Re: Transgender Day of Rememberance

November 20 2012
It's always important to remember that no matter how far we've come we've still got battles left to fight. A lot of us could end up with an unfortunate end if we are in the wrong place at the wrong time with the wrong people.

Rest in peace to everyone who have lost their lives just because they wanted to live it.

Transgender Day of Rememberance

November 20 2012
Today is the International Transgender Day of Remembrance. Today, we remember our trans brothers and sisters that have lost their lives over the past year. Today, we honor their loss.

The March 2012 update reveals a total of 816 reported killings of trans people in 55 countries worldwide from January 1st 2008 to December 31st 2011. The update shows an exponential increase in reported killings of trans people over the last four years. In 2008, 141 cases were reported, in 2009 213 cases, in 2010 214 cases, and in 2011 a shocking number of 248. These are mainly the reported cases that could be found through Internet research and cooperation with trans organizations and activists. In most countries, data on murdered trans people are not systematically produced and it is impossible to estimate the numbers of unreported cases.

I spoke with my company's IT guy to see if there was any stigma attached to being geek squad and he said the only complaint he's heard from people who work as part of geek squad is dealing with the public. Otherwise the company does treat them well.
I've also read that Best Buy is going to be closing a lot of stores and setting up those little kiosks instead in shopping centers so now may not be the best time to go to that company but if you have an IT certification you can pretty much take that anywhere and make good money.

The problem is they are pissing people off royally with all the stupid restrictions which doesn't make anyone want to subscribe

Completely agree! I really like the game and I wouldn't hesitate to re-subscribe, so long as I'm having fun. As far as I'm concerned, $15/month is a bargain and I strongly disagree with the notion that "free-to-play" means everyone has some kind of entitlement to play for completely free.

However, the "F2P" restrictions here are so ridiculous that I've lost interest for now. The only reason I ever unsubscribed was to give the company time to make some decisions on these issues which were hot topics as the time:
  • ability to multi-spec - still unknown?
  • availability of additional character slots (I like to play lots of alts) - some progress
  • server consolidation - done
  • business model - done

Edit: My advice to Bioware on their business model: "Keep it simple, stupid."

Re: Uganda embargo petition

Fixed. For some reason it modified the URL through the tool to "
http://https://...
" and that would confuse any browser. True enough. This is about the only thing that the US could do though is shut everything off to them. The idea being that the reasonable people will stand up and tell the government to stop. It never happens because by the time it gets to this point the people are already to beaten down. At least if that petition hits it's mark it will go to the President to think of something to do; or at least explain why we are going to stand by silent while people are killed.
I was going to do a bit of spinning, so I will watch that video while I do that. ^.^

The situation in Uganda is truly horrifying and everything I hear coming from that country worries me greatly.

I absolutely agree that our nations should act against this but I don't see it happening. Aid helps the most poorest people around the world and I don't think any government will turn their backs on saving people from dying due to illness or starvation just because a country has a terrible stance on GBLT issues.

The Uganda powers that be use the rampant homophobia in that country to distract from the real issues they have.

A openly gay British DJ named Scott Mills went to Uganda to do a documentary a couple of years ago. I'll see if I can find it on you tube:

Uganda embargo petition

November 20 2012
Just got this petition pointed out to me on my FaceBook.

remove all foreign aid to Uganda and impose sanctions if the "Kill the Gays" bill is passed by the legislature.

Yes, really. They have had this bill kicking around for a while now, but they are making a big push to get it enacted now. It would make being any "homosexual act" or "cross dressing" punishable by death. Look in to it, and click the sign button on the petition if you feel you should.

Re: Profession Selection

November 19 2012
Guardian is one of my main and I wanted to make either engineer or necromancer as my second main but I chose mesmer instead. I've done a lot of experimentations and testing for these three professions so I guess I could say that I've got good experience on this.

Guardian:
A lot of people might think that guardian is a great melee fighter like a warrior, because they use heavy armor, swinging greatsword and all. But if you play dungeons and dragons, the cleric class uses heavy armor with mace and shield as weapons. So this is the idea of how a guardian should be. However they are still a good and strong melee class and can tank well. If a warrior depend on his offensive skills for battle, a guardian uses his buffing skills to defend himself. Guardians are well known for their Aegis as a defence skill, together with a lot of health regenarations skills. For offence, they have several burning skills for dot damage. So imho, if you think you want to win an opponent by playing a guardian like a warrior (by spamming all offeinsive skills), it could hardly happen. You gotta depend on your protection buff and some dot skills. Plus.. guardian is one of the class which has the lowest health other than elementalist and thief.

Conclusion: Guardian = awesome protection and healing buff + burning.

--------------------------

Engineer:
To me they are the most fun class to play. They are best known for kiting, knock back and condition dealer. They are very good at keeping their opponents at bay with a lot of knock back skills. An array of condition maker that decrease movement speed and inflict poison/bleed/burn just make them better at this. You can either play this class like a desperado with pistols and riffle or focus on throwing bombs and grenades (which most of the condition skills come from). Turrets are fun too, but they're not so effective for pve, unless you're fighting champion monsters or in a dungeon or in WvW. You can do a lot of stuff with this class.

Conclusion: Engineer = condition maker + knockback / movement stopper (not sure if the term is acceptable but I hope you got it  )

--------------------------

Necromancer:
People fear necromancer because of their crazy bleeding skills.. and poison. A lot of people would use this condition damage as the main weapon rather on using summoning simply because it's more effective. But still the summoning is pretty strong too and work effectively in PvE. Unlike engineer, a necromancer's condition damage is stronger and longer and has better radius too ( I think =/ ). Other than that, they are also good at removing condition by converting conditions to boon.. or "swallowing" it and putting the curse on the enemies. They also have the most HP of all the classes, on par with warriors. On top of that, they can suck blood out of the opponent which is why you can see sometimes a necromancer is the one who stands in front of the line tanking the boss monster. Their aoe condition damage can also be traited to heal themselves and allies (though very little regeneration).
The only reason why I didn't choose this for my main is because they can't buff allies.. and the aoe healing for allies is only when there are monsters around. They have good speed buff and shield buff though... but only for themselves.

Conclusion: Necromancer = strong bleed+poison, condition "eater", lots of HP with HP steal.

--------------------------

All of these are only based on my experience with a lot of experiments and reading. I apologize if the way I describe the classes is not like how it suppose to be. But still, the best way to know is to play the class yourself. You should have a clear experience if you play the class until about level 17.

Cheers

Thanks for the info, pnuttbuttah! I didn't "mouse" over the points in the list when I first saw it. It seemed rather "uninformative" to me. [notice to self: always mouse over any information given by game developers as they seem to want to hide stuff everywhere!] Unfortunately, this also just further indicates how pointless many of the restrictions are. They sound truly desperate in the descriptions in the Cartel Store for the listed unlocks as they point out what subs get for everything. The problem is they are pissing people off royally with all the stupid restrictions which doesn't make anyone want to subscribe, it just makes people say FU Bioware.....

Re: Ship Names

November 19 2012
My naming policy has been something really cool, and Japanese. Mainly I have ended up with two for the most part; Kiri Kudashi, and Tomoe Gozen. Kiri Kudashi is the killing strike, and Tomoe Gozen was the wife, and field general, of a feudal Japan daimyo. She, when ordered to retreat when the city they lived is was being taken, rode a horse in to the enemy formation, and took the main field officer's head before following her troops and husband in retreat. Good roll model!
All my shuttles are the default names because I don't seem to care about the names of the names of them that much.

Re: F2P Accounts unable to log into custom channels

November 18 2012
Yes, they seem to have quite a few pointless restrictions that are just causing major problems all around. Another example is you can't trade with a F2P player. You can only mail items to them and then they have to wait an hour for the items to appear in their mailbox. They must have changed the credit cap if your toon was still earning Halish and didn't make any changes to the information on the website. Although maybe it's different for preferred status players than it is for a new F2P account. They are of course being very uninformative because no where do they actually list what F2P accounts aren't allowed to do. I've just been finding these things out from our first F2P member. He's been letting me know what he can't do so that I can help others that may be running into similar problems. I've been tempted to try to start a F2P account for myself using a different email address but I really don't want to have to download the game again and I'm not sure I could have both running at the same time even though one account would be on my laptop while the other is on my desktop.

Re: Best Buy

November 18 2012
I'm not sure how much work they actually do in house because every time I've had to take my computers there under their extended warranty, they've shipped it to their repair center in Kentucky. They couldn't even repair it when the plastic bracket that held the fan over the cpu broke, it was sent to Kentucky. I know they install home theaters and such but I don't think that is IT oriented.

My background is in the medical field so I would recommend staying in nursing because you will always have a job as a nurse. CNA's aren't as much in demand as RN's are though so I guess it depends what field of nursing you're currently in.

Computers are certainly much more pleasant to work with than most patients tend to be so I can see why you'd like to switch careers there but just be careful you don't get yourself into too niche a market or position because that could really put a damper on possibilities for the future.
