The movie is going to be nothing like the book. The only reason they even optioned the rights to the book was because they wanted a relatively known title with which to sell their generic zombie movie/Brad Pitt vehicle. I've heard nothing good about this movie since it got announced.
Not sure how I feel about this. The previews make it look like a "guy trying to save his family and then find his family" kind of movie. The book was so well written and I think should have been left as it was.
Is anyone else excited about this? The fact that it is going to be a 13 week event makes me very very happy. It being on CBS makes me cringe a little. I really hope they don't mess it up.
Was gonna do the all girl crew again, but that security officer (can't remember the race, it's the one from Enterprise with the face tattoos) was just too hot not to use when he popped up in my new officer list. :D
We will be trying to organize a Guild Wars Throwback event for June the 2nd. Those interested, please private message me and join the event once it has been confirmed and listed in Stonewall Events.
I did really like the movie. In response to your nitpicks, Jacien, here's some of my own.
The Enterprise under water scene is made more absurd because they made this Enterprise a lot bigger than Kirk's. It's about as long as a Sovereign at 700m.
As for the Klingons, both DS9 and Enterprise made it canon that they were smooth forehead like we saw in TOS. And, they showed by the models at Buckaroo Bonzai's office that Enterprise was still part of that time line.
Speaking of the models, what kind of super secret organization has a model of their newest super secret dreadnaught sitting out for everyone to see? And I'm sure you can buy the model at the Starfleet Command gift shop (and you'll be able to buy the model courtesy of QMx who made those models for the movie).
I have to agree, that ST:IV is one of my favs. The one liners alone are great. But if you ever get a chance to see the out takes, they're just awesome.
I was very scared to see this film based on the mixed reviews I'd heard from friends and people in vent. I didn't even read this thread until today for fear of spoilers. I didn't read any spoilers online either I wanted to be as unbiased as I could when I finally saw the film which I did this last Saturday. I was pleasantly surprised to find that I didn't hate the film I actually did enjoy it.
I agree that Star Trek fans are very much the hardest to please and yeah maybe Paramount is basically telling us to stick our critiques up our collective plasma manifolds by dumbing down what Star Trek is all about for a less particular audience.
I am also taking the alt-timeline story with a grain of salt (or should I say salt on the rim, bartender another Margarita por favor!) but I just try not to compare it too much to what I grew up on because they're different and that's ok. Some things I loved and a couple things did bother me:
The Enterprise under water? Ok I know that Voyager was capable of this but really what was the point? What was wrong with being up in orbit?
Spock wigged out a little too much. Yes it's ok for Spock to periodically lose his composure it happened in TOS when he thought he'd killed Kirk and while the "Khaaaaaannnn!" emote did draw a rather ironic parallel it felt a bit contrived. Khan was cool and I was surprised having read very little about the plot prior to seeing the movie but Khan Noonien Singh was supposed to be of Indian descent, not Anglo-Saxon.
I was pretty sure that was Praxis as well and it's entirely possible that in the alternate timeline increased military production over the last 30 years caused Praxis to destabilize sooner. It would also explain why Ketha province (Where Martok is from) is now a post-apocalyptic wasteland.
I liked how they did the Klingons and hope that the next movie involves an all-out war with them because the Organians aren't stepping in to stop the fighting and force a peace treaty.
Mentioning Section 31 was pretty awesome and fits with the more militaristic Starfleet of this alternate timeline. Some of their technology strains credulity though. If you can create a portable transporter that can beam you across hundreds of light years to your most fearsome enemy's doorstep then why not send a legion of Maco's to attack Kronos or any other strategically important planet?
I liked the reverse death scene and the parallels to TWoK that it drew as well as all the other little tidbits like Mudd's ship but point of order; Mammals have litters, reptiles don't. Gorn lay eggs it's in the cannon for heaven's sake.
There seems to be a bug on mine where my main captain is surrounded by clones of his first officer, rather than the entire bridge staff. Is there a way to fix it?
